Has anyone ever experienced 1st trimester insomnia? I fall asleep easily and then after about 2 to 4 hours of sleep wake up and can't go back to sleep for hours at a time. It's been like this for about 2 weeks and I'm only 5 weeks pregnant. Once last week I woke up at 1:30 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep for the rest of the night. My ds sleeps with us and is nursing at night and he wakes up once or twice to nurse. It's so nerve wracking to lay there as my toddler snoozes away...and I'm wide awake. When he was a babe, and woke up all the time, I at least had him when I was awake :LOL
I know insomnia comes the 3rd trimester, but why am I wide awake now?
Any suggestions on how to combat this? Thanks so much!!

If it is not an everynight kind of thing....I would definitely give Boiron Quietade a try. It is a homeopathic remedy for sleeplessness and restless sleep. It has worked for me at least 90% of the time. No side effects and safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You should be able to find it at any health food store (or online). I think insomnia is just a common element of pregnancy :)

No advice. Just sympathy. I experienced insomnia at the beginning of this pregnancy. It's been much better my second trimester. I hope it eases up for you soon.:zzz

I did this too in the first trimester in all pregnancies, and off and on throughout. Just a simple herbal tea like "sleepy time" or other calming tea helped. Also, the Main THing that helped was having a snack before bed. I found that I would wake up because I was actually hungry. So I would eat a bowl of cereal or slice of bread with peanut butter (something to stick to your ribs) before bed, then have a banana or yogurt or p. butter and crackers ready for a quick middle of the night snack. Then I would sleep well until morning. It's hard when the kids wake you up. I know how that is. I would just calculate some extra "bed" time in there by going to sleep really early and/or trying to catch some extra Zzzs in the morning. Some mornings after DD goes to school I sometimes set up a bed on the sofa and turn on cartoons for DS and I snooze off and on as needed through the morning. Gotta have that sleep!
Good luck.

I have had the same experience as the previous post. In my first tri, I would wake up almost every night to pee, then lie there for hours. Awful! It's much better now.
Anyway, my midwife suggested that I'm probably hungry (the baby really needs to "eat" every 3-4 hours) so I started having a middle of the night snack (small glass of skim, couple bites of banana, a few peanuts, granola, somthing like that), and that morped into a generous bowl of cereal w/skim before bed. It totally helped. I rarely do it now.
I think the tea is also a great idea.
