Some of you know my sister is preggo- but this is the thing. She has had an IUD in for about a year and she got her period last month and the doc said her IUD was still there- well.... We are not going to have a new baby in the family- lol!! But the IUD is missing- so what can happen if it is inside her? Has any other mamas had this happen to them? Can it or will it hurt the baby and how do they get it out?
I know it could have fallen out on its own and not be inside her but they are not sure. She goes in for a U/S on friday to find it.

I haven't been able to feel my IUD string for over a year now. I had an U/S when it first disappeared. It was indeed still in place, it had just turned. Now, when I go for my check-up, they do an U/S to insure it is still in place.

I had an IUD in and removed before this pregnancy. The way my GP explained it to me was that I need to check for the strings every month. If ever I don't feel them, I need to call the GP and schedule an appointment. It is possible for the IUD to come out on its own. It's also possible that the string could somehow come untied.
She explained to me that when a woman gets pregnant with an IUD still in place (rare, but it does happen) then they will do an u/s to find the location of the IUD. If they can pull it out without interfering with the fetus then they will. If it's too close to the fetus, they will simply leave the IUD in place. In pregnancies where the IUD is left in place, it simply comes out when the placenta comes out in most cases. Either way it comes out after birth.
That's all I know. HTH!
