Looking to see if there are any others here on MDC! I started hooping bc of a thread on TBW and have been loving it. So now I am trying to find a few others who enjoy it too!!
A few of my hoops:
My 1st hoop I made (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a6/Benkos/DoctorEthanHoop025.jpg)
2nd Hoop I made (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a6/Benkos/HoopIBWCountyBoys002.jpg)

I have requested a few instructional DVDs from the library. Hoping they help me. Youtube has some great videos too.
So who hoops too?!?!

Not a hooper here, but really like it. I'm just not good. :(
:lol
But I was playing else where and came across this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKlgWotPLTo) of this chick I met at a Tea Leaf Green show not to long ago.
Thought I'd add it here. :D

You guys make me want to go out and get a hula hoop! I don't think I could make one, at least not until we move to our own place...but man I want one! We played the hula game at my Dads ont he wii and it killed the abs, but was so fun!

Have fun creating your circus Sunny!!
SeekingSleep, I heard the Wii was good for hooping. A few Mamas on my NutriSystem forum said that since they do not have real hoops.
It was so easy to make my own hoops. Taping probably was the hardest part for me and of that it was deciding the pattern.
Happy Hooping!!

not much of a hooper, but I've been meaning to make one. We live in a very hoop-friendly place. I saw several vids on youtube from hooping folks I know. That fire one was wild! (not my area I don't think). They do teach hooping here, too. It's fun. I've done it successfully with the right hoop, but I really have to have a good one or it just ends up around my ankles. At my kid's school last spring a group of girls entered the talent show doing hooping!

So has anyone decided to make or purchase a hoop yet?
I have one! I bought it from a friend who makes them from irrigation tubing, SO easy! You can fill them with rice or sand or beans too, if you want it weighted a little more.
You can go to Lowes or Home Depot or another home improvement store and buy black 1 inch irrigation tubing by the foot, and get connectors there too, in the same section, and make a circle, add some fun bicycle tape for decoration and HOOP! lol
check it out, it's cheap too! link (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100030452&N=10000003+90401+500117)

I am thinking about getting more tubing. My 1st set of tubing was 1" 100 psi. The stuff for the next set I am think 3/4" 160 psi.
I have considered weighing it down a little too but afraid I will not use them much later bc they will be to heavy if I do that for tricks and stuff. I need to get out and hoop some. We have all been ill here so not much of it going on.

3/4 inch 160 psi is my favorite weight tubing :) And FWIW, I find that my favorite hoops are NOT weighted. Diameter-wise, belly button height is the easiest for me. I also have some smaller ones that I use, but I feel most comfortable with the bigger one.

I'm not an expert or anything, but the one hoop I have, I can disconnect and reconnect it, as it's made from irrigation tubing and uses an irrigation connector, so I can add rice, water, sand, beans, whatever, and empty it out again if I want it not weighted. Weighted can be a little easier to learn if you're slow, like me.... but then, lighter is easier for tricks and moving it up and down the body faster. I guess it depends on why you're hooping... for exercise, for tricks, for fun..... If you just want to go in circles on the waist, repetitively, for a workout, a weighted one might give you more of a workout if it requires more muscle "oomph" to move it.....

So the school I work at has a ton of cheap bent up hula hoops that don't even really work. I was talking to the gym teacher today and told him that I make hula hoops that are virtually kid-proof and he asked if I could make 60 of them for the school! I'm not going to decorate them or anything, but it should be fun...I'm excited to see the kids hoop with "real" hoops :)

Sooooooo....
I made my first hoop last night!! :joy:
And I got my 1st injury. :lol (I am a known klutz, it happened my 3rd try. :shake) I totally banged my elbow on the hoop, huge bruise and very tender today. However, I had so much fun playing with it today...my 12 y/o is amazing...he wants me to make one for him, too...and his friend who was here last night.
My hip bones are a bit tender, too...but I actually got to the point where I could keep it up for a pretty long time. I'm quite sure it ain't real purty, though.
Thanks for starting this tribe and giving me the motivation to get out there and try it. :D I think I will have a lot of fun doing it.

ok so I've been to lowes, home depot, the farm store, and a locally owned garden store in my smallish town, and i still can't find 3/4 160psi irrigation tubing. it is usually black right? i found some white that was close, like 3/4 100 psi or something like that. i could care less about the color but i was wondering if there is a difference in the weight/material of black verses white. also the white stuff i found only comes in 10ft or 400ft. i think 10ft would be smallish and 400ft would be ALOT of hoops. any suggesttions?

Lower than 160 psi will work, I just prefer the heavier weight. That's not to say you can't add something inside (sand, water, etc.) to make it heavier--just watch how much you add. I like using 100 psi for kid hoops.
On another note, I decorated a few hoops this week...I need to post pics because I think they turned out really cool! One of them is my new favorite and looks like Rainbow Brite...when I get the pic up, you'll know what I mean ;)

I've gotten it from this website:
http://www.identi-tape.com/links.html
Warning on that tape though--it has backing and doesn't stretch well. I did 2 or 3 hoops with fun sparkly tape and it was SO annoying to do. I switched back to electrical tape because it's forgiving ;) Don't know though if anyone else has any other sources of fun tape that's more user friendly?

I think that's what I got, too. It's for potable water? I couldn't find anything black, but this one said 3/4" and 160psi so I figured it would work.
The colored tape was expensive! Holy moly! It doesn't need to be taped though, right? I figured I'd start with the hoop and go from there.

I couldn't stop!I was hooping, and smiling and giggling, and then after a few minutes I was even sweating. It was awesome, and I just wanted to share that with you all. My friend said I could borrow it, but somehow with two kiddos, diaper bag, etc, it didn't make it to the car. :love i love it love it!!! been hooping EVERYDAY for almost 2 months!!!
just an FYI... i originally got white tubing that is meant to be connected with an outside connector but i didn't know that and had gotten the inside connecter, i rigged it anyway. for those looking to make your own stick to the black tubing. which i have now thanks to my cousin’s water pipe breaking, i never would have spent the money on a huge roll, but he did and gave me the rest, which is a lot. :D
i have made one for a birthday girl and some more for christmas presents :thumb

Thanks. I have actually now hooped a couple of times but being limited to indoor hooping has put a damper on things. I am not lucky enough to have a basement (would not want one where I live either since they tend to flood pretty easily around here).
When you get good you will have to take a video and post it for us!!

I'm so glad I found this thread! :joy:
I discovered hooping earlier this summer at the Britenbush summer solstice festival and I thought it was so much fun. I looked around my area for classes or workshops but couldn't find a single one. I got discouraged and decided to just forget it for now.
Somebody reminded me about hooping a couple days ago and I decided that if I couldn't find a class I was just going to try to learn on my own. I found that site about how to build your own hoop last night and I made two hoops today: one for my daughter and one for myself. They turned out pretty nice and I am so excited to give mine a shot!
One problem, though: my living room isn't too large and I am afraid of doing some damage to the TV or my potted plants. :innocent I can't wait to try hooping outside on a regular basis, but with 8 inches of snow on the ground and four more months of almost constant rain I think I'm going to have to wait. Aaarrrgg! I wish I had some place to hoop!

How do I know how heavy a hoop to get? I am debating between a 3, 4 and 5 lb. water filled one. I have a lot of weight to lose and have never successfully hula-hooped in my life. Lol! Help... :D
Thanks...

So I'm totally stoked now. I always loved hooping - it was definitely my favorite part of gym growing up! And to find out how easy it is to make your own heavier, not bent hoop is fantastic! Y'all are my inspiration!!! :joy:

Ditto!! I have been thinking that I really need to get some more physical activity but I've never been a go-to-the-gym type of gal. I also need a reason to get outside more often. I LOVE hula hooping, but I've only used the toy store ones, and done the regular old style. I pride myself on winning two hula hoop contests when I was like 10 and 14 years old. :lol I always admired the hoop girls in shows, but now that I now I can make my own hoop??? And learn tricks on YouTube?? Hell yeaaahhh, I am in! :joy:

I just ran out and bought some pipe from Home Depot. It says 3/4" PVC IPS. It says nothing about PSI anywhere, and it was the only 3/4" black tube and the store was about to close. When I cut the ties off, it seemed way too flexible. :( Plus I just noticed the roll is 50ft, not 100. Double :( Guess I'm taking it back tomorrow.

Cool! I finally got the right tubing and made some hoops. I still don't have gaff tape on it. I'm wondering if that will make a lot of difference. I can get the hoop from around my waist to up around my neck and then lift an arm out, but when I try to keep it up around my chest with both arms out, it always slips down. (and I don't have much boobage to help out.) Grrr! I can catch it on my butt though :) :lol
This is so much fun! :love I couldn't stop the first few days so I scored some nice bruises. Oops. I'm thinking about doing SaFire's online class after I get a bit better.

Let's see if we can revive this thread by moving it to the Fitness forum.

Thanks for reviving the thread. This looks fun. My daughter is really good at it, but I never have been. I'll have to try again.
