My husband has started talking about moving to Nova Scotia. This is strictly in the preliminary planning stages. I am intrigued yet I am scared out of my mind to consider such a move.

We currently live in Northern New York State.

If you could give me one reason why such a move would be beneficial, what would it be?

How about a reason NOT to take the plunge?

Just wondering why Nova Scotia? Totally random out of the blue? Or does he have family here? Anyway, reason to move--it's a great place, and I love it here. Reason not too--well, it is another country, after all!

If you had any more specific questions, I (or any other Nova Scotians on MDC) might be able to give you more detailed information about the place. I'm in Halifax, FWIW, which is the biggest city in NS. And it's not a big city by any means.

Totally random out of the blue. He is really researching the Cape Breton area. On one hand I think he is crazy crazy crazy to even consider such a drastic move but on the other hand I would go in a heartbeat.

Wow. Cape Breton is certainly beautiful to visit, but I really can't tell you much about living there. There may be some CB mamas on MDC, so you could post a Cape Breton thread maybe.

I'm new to New Brunswick (right next to NS). We decided in Feb to pick up and move from Alberta to NB without ever having been here before. I love it here and the change is so good for us. I don't really have any info on NS specifically, but this end of Canada is absolutely beautiful and peaceful and I am so happy that we made our way to Atlantic Canada. Good luck with your move!!

I can't say I love it here but then it was a forced company move ("move or you're out of a job"). We moved here from Ontario. We've been here since 2001 and we're still adjusting. It isn't home but since DS came along n late 2005 we've learned to explore a little more and enjoy the things NS has to offer.

Do you have jobs that allow you to move to Canada? I ask because I am a Canadian living in the US and you can't just "move" because you feel like it.... there are many, many rules around it.

We are living near Edmundston...but far enough away that we don't smell the mill.

We were living in Jasper. I was born there but grew up in BC and lived in Jasper for about 5 years before we moved here. My dh is from Ontario. Jasper was beautiful and a nice place to be, but with the cost and shortage of housing, we didn't see our future there. My dh had an opportunity to move to the maritimes with his company and we were like "okay...let's just do it!".

So here we are. I love how lush and beautiful my surroundings are. I love how rural, relaxed and friendly my area is. We were able to buy a house for probably a 6th of the cost that the same house would have been in Jasper. It is so humid here. In Jasper my skin was so dry to the point that I would scratch till my legs were bleeding. Also we live in a predominately french speaking area and while dh and I speak limited french, my son will grow up bilingual. I like being closer to the ocean. Those are some of the reasons I am so happy to be here.

Job... Yes.

May I ask why you left the Country?

I've lived in the Maritimes all of my life, so I'm most definitely biased. I love it here - the general aura is relaxed and friendly, and the coastline is beautiful. Living in rural areas definitely has its challenges (meeting like-minded people being the primary one for us) - I hope that everything works out for you!
