my son is starting middle school. up until now he has been vaxed ,BUT it's been years since he's had to have a required shot and my beliefs have changed . i would now have to put in for a religous exemption after all these years of not having one. has anyone been in this situation before? what happened? if denied, i would probably have to take him out and homeschool or risk my daughters exemption, right?

Where are you? It's doable in NY, but you'll have to be very careful with your wording. Here's the NYS Exemption request form (http://emsc33.nysed.gov/sss/HealthServices/requestreligiousexemptimmunization.htm).

You should submit the request ASAP. You have a certain amount of grace period after school begins, 14 days maybe? Search the Vaccination archives, there's tons of info there. Try the username LongIsland in your search - she's the NYS exemptions expert!

How long it takes for approval/denial depends on who reviews the exemption. Here it is the school principal - but it used to be the school board and Superintendent.
