thought you all might be interested in this. a mama friend of mine just sent it to me, so i wanted to forward it to everyone here - hopefully it'll make a big impression. hard to believe stuff like this still goes on, in the nation's capitol no less!

A friend of a mom in one of my mothers' groups was recently
breastfeeding in the children's section at the Barnes and Noble
downtown. An employee approached her and told her that she could not
breastfeed in the store due to store policy and the fact that they
have gotten complaints from customers. The employee said that she
was more than welcome to feed her baby in the restroom. She was
quite surprised, but as a new mom trying to get used to breastfeeding
in public, she complied. As a result of this incident, there will be
a NURSE IN tomorrow (Thursday, October 30) at the Barnes and Noble
downtown (555 12th St NW, at Metro Center). It will take place at
2:30 p.m. in the children's section. There may be some press there
to cover this too. If you have time available tomorrow, please come
show your support! Thanks.

I went to the nurse-in but had to leave before it was resolved. This is a message posted to the MOTH's list-serve.

Those who couldn't make the nurse-in but were asking about how it went:

About 41 moms, 40 babies, and 3 dads showed up -- you should have felt the
temperature in the kids' section rise as we all started feeding our babies
simultaneously!

As far as most of us were concerned, Barnes and Noble did well. The store
manager apologized for the nasty employee's behavior and said moms were
welcome to nurse anywhere in the store. Then they gave us
cookies. Honestly, how could anyone argue with a bunch of loving,
overheated, vulnerable mommies and babies?

I've been part of actions before, but they were nothing like this; a crowd
of babies nursing spreads love, not conflict. (Should we go to the
Pentagon next?)

Hope that report wasn't too sappy.
