Hi Mamas,

I found out on Tuesday that my supply had dropped dramatically and that my DD wasn't getting enough to eat. I am glad to know why she has been so fussy and refusing to nap, but feeling just horrible as a mom. I now have the hospital grade pump, taking fenugreek, and goats rue and drinking tons of water. My best friend was nice enough to give me last of her domperidone while I waited to get my own - - - - but.... the compounding pharmacy near us needs a prescription and none of my doctor's will write one. They say it is WAY to dangerous for them to approve. (Though they are happy to approve formula!). I will order it from overseas but my understanding is that it takes at least two weeks.

Any advice out there? I am in the San Francisco Bay Area. If anyone has some and is willing to loan a two week supply I can give it back when mine arrives. If not, any tips on getting the prescription ASAP. And has anyone heard this, about it being dangerous?

A few posts before this one, someone is offering some free domperidone. I would contact them asap.

ETA: I took dom for 4 months with NO side effects.

try blessed thistle. only use domperidone as a last resort.

I can't find the link, but I do recall reading something about it being a hormone disruptor...

I believe I can address the "dangerous" question.

A while back, the FDA released a warning about domperidone and its use to increase milk supply. The warning said that domperidone has been shown to cause heart problems.

There was quite a big to-do. The big breastfeeding advocate doctors in the U.S. were pretty steamed over it, because domperidone is known to be far safer for the baby and mama both than the more popular drugs available in the U.S. (i.e. Reglan, which crosses the blood/brain barrier, while domperidone does not).

The FDA's claim that domperidone is dangerous is based on extremely high, INTRAVENOUS doses of it.

Obviously, claiming that the drug is worthy of warning based on this data was questionable.

I was taking domperidone at the time (a very high dose compared to many on this forum) and I wrote a prominent doctor who specializes in milk production problems (maybe have been Dr. Jay Gordon; can't remember for sure) when the warning by the FDA was issued (obviously I was concerned).

I no longer have his e-mail, but he felt very strongly that domperidone is safe, extremely effective, and by far the best choice out there among prescription drugs for those who have milk supply issues (I had breast reduction surgery).

Here is the FDA's warning about domperidone:

You can see a physician's rebuttal here:

The FDA scared some compounding pharmacies as a result of this warning. Meanwhile it is an OTC med in other countries. Gee.. wonder who brought this "health issue" to the FDA's attention?

Hope this helps. Every mama has to make these decisions for herself...

I did contact the mom about the extra pills. Thanks for that suggestion. I have been on the herbs since Sunday.

I order from inhousepharmacy, It usually takes about 10 days from me ordering but they do say on their website it may take up to 21 days- Ive ordered 5 times and it's never taken that long.

Headaches for about a week when I worked up to 80 mgs. a day was my only side effect.
