Does anybody know where to get either organic or hormone/antibiotic-free meat that is slaughtered humanely from anywhere in the Seattle area? I'm on the east side, but I'm willing to go where I need to. I'm just sort of fed up with the whole beef industry and really would like to know where my meat came from, if possible. Also, I'd like to support local farmers.

You can order from Thundering Hooves and pick up at one of their drop off spots. http://thunderinghooves.net/

I went to a butcher on 164th in Lynnwood, across from the park n ride. He had a rather good spread of organic beef if I remember. Although I was there for lamb, so I wasn't really looking. It was called S&J meats.

ETA Any sort of Indian grocers like JD's market (lynnwood)or Continental spice and grocery(aurora by greenlake) also have halal-slaughtered- meats.

If you're interested in a side of beef (frozen) to buy, they usually go up for order in the winter/spring. We purchased ours this year from Colvin Ranch (http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M19820) in Tenino since the closer places were sold out by the time I got on the ball. They aren't certified organic, but use organic practices and we've been really happy. I'm on the mailing list for West Valley Beef (http://www.westvalleybeef.com/)for this coming year because they are closer. Both places are pastured cattle, since grass fed is way better and way more humane than corn fed.

You can also find a list of farms that ship beef here (http://www.eatwild.com/products/farmsthatship.html#WA). And a list of farms that sell beef here (http://www.eatwild.com/products/washington.html).

I was actually coming here to post about this very thing! Could someone tell me what a good price is for beef around these parts?

I don't eat beef but DP loves that place. It's not cheapest in the world, but it seems to be quality stuff. The owner there doesn't even keep deli ham in the store because without all the preservatives it goes bad before he can sell it all. I respect that. I don't know where he gets his meat from exactly, but I'm quite sure that it's all local, and he would gladly tell you about it. I'm really not a meat person, but I had good feelings about that place. It's actually on Ash Way, but you can probably see it from 164th. They often have coupons in the local mailings.

For buying a side, we paid $2.99/lb hanging weight. I dunno what it would be all butchered in the stores.
