View Full Version : A new bellydance tribe!

With the reorganization, this seems like a good time to start a new tribe thread! I've just finished a move up to Montana, and have connected with the dancers up here. Last night we danced for the monthly Art Walk, which was a lot of fun, and I'm slowly getting back into my costumes after the birth of the new little one.
I've been attending a class weekly with one of the dancers up here, and she and I are meeting to practice together once a week at the college. We're also working on getting more students involved, and I'm planning a couple of workshops.
How's everyone else doing?

Thanks for starting this athansor!:joy:
Lots of dancing here! I've been practicing weekly with the troupe I'm in. We performed not too long ago and will do some stuff this fall, not sure what that will entail though! I want to get some new melodias so I need to save some money! A friend in our troupe recently made me some really pretty panels and I've been using that as far as a belt goes. It's fun to dance in new stuff! I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts!
Namaste!

I'm here! I'm here! Haven't posted in some time but I - am - here!

Dancin' like a maniac. Much to share! Most exciting thing at the moment:

OPENING MY OWN STUDIO!!!

Any great name ideas?

Must be:
--pronounceable in Spanish
--have coolness dripping from it
--goddess stuff welcome
--short n sweet

I'm thinking about Ghaziya, plural of ghawazee. I like it, but it's kind of strange in Spanish. Just a bit.

So, lots of construction and money (outflux) happening in my world, I'm remodeling a little place in a great location.

Oh my goodness so glad I found this tribe!!

I took a few months of classes and LOVED it but my teacher moved and I'm just too lazy to drive 30 minutes every week. Yeah I know, I'm bad. But I'm preggers again! :joy: So I want to start up with BD again. Any video suggestions? I do want to go back to class but after the quiziness ends.

Yeah I am so happy to find this group!!

I have been dancing for approx 2 1/2 years (more if I didn't have to take a break thanks to a car accident) in several styles of traditional and fusion belly dance. Now I am 10 weeks and excited about keeping up with my dancing during my pregnancy.

I take 3 hours of class a week, and mostly perform with my class or as a soloist. This week we have two performances, with me doing a Cane Dance, a Gothic Dance and a Solo Gothic Dance.

I was going to get a new tribal fusion bra and a new caberet costume, but it's probably a good thing I put it off, since I have no idea what my bust and waist are going to be after all this!!! :wink

BTW does any one know if this is a good DVD for pregnant dancers? http://www.amazon.com/Prenatal-Bellydance-Naia/dp/B000E6GDXS

Yeah there are some dancers here!!!

Columbusmomma stories like yours give me hope I will get to dance long into my pregnancy too! I love dancing and it really feels great for my body. Basically I want to dance as long as my body will let me since I know the excersize and moves should help me heal after too!

Yeah to ATS! That is one of the styles I perform it is so fun! I love to go to events and be able to jump in with other dancers and also to get to learn new combos from dancers too!

Shimmy on!

I haven't tried it, I wish amazon had some reviews because it looks pretty good. I keep debating buying a video to help see what moves I should and shouldn't do.

But since I am still taking classes its not a big rush. I did learn that one new move is a no-no and I am still learning not to push myself. Taking it easy is hard.

Some people suggest against fast shimmies. I was doing a "washing machine" type of side to side shimmy. It felt like it was really rocking my insides and felt almost sore in my low pelvis, so I knew to stop. I will be watching my knee generated shimmies and my speed to make sure they dont feel the same. Everything else has felt ok for me to do in class, so mostly I am just watching my own body right now and doing only what feels good.

I've heard that too - but only sort of so thanks for that! I always do the side to side washing machine style shimmies REALLY slow but yeah I need to pay attention to all shimmying. Thanks!:joy:

have you checked out:www.pregnantbellydance.com?

I really want to get that dvd but have you or has anyone else on this thread actually ordered from her site? I only ask because at the checkout it shows it's 'safe' on her site but NOT on my comp which it usually does at the check out so I just wanted to know what other people's experience is. I wouldn't be so concerned but my mom is the one buying it for me and I'm a tad more conservative when it's not my credit card....

Bellydancer for four years chiming in! I danced throughout my pregnancy with my 2yo DD, even performing at 36 weeks. I'm planning to keep going through this pregnancy too, as I felt good throughout and felt it kept me active and fit.

Happy shimmies!

I did some simple hip circles and things while I was in early labor, and felt it really helped me to relax my lower back and maybe let my little one move down easier. I'm interested to see what I feel like doing in labor this time around...maybe have a birth hafla?!

Kritto I heard more than one lady mention that hip circles during early labour are helpful. Hopefully you'll feel like sharing with us after this next labour for you! I know it's a dance designed to help with labour so I was just curious if any ladies out there used the moves...Thanks for you input!!!:love

columbusmomma I thought about that but the phone number listed is just for the business offices of the dvd manufacturer. I broke down and ordered it through Amazon. The seller was Amirasbelly but I went through Amazon to be on the safe side since it's my mom's c.c. Thanks for your thoughts!:love

I've been bellydancing for 3.5 years now and LOVE it! My class is a really tight knit group of women. I danced through my pregnancy. I performed when I was about 15 weeks but didn't do the last recital b/c it was on my due date. I was late, so I could have danced in it. I didn't want to get staged in then have to miss the recital and mess everyone up.

I did do some hip circles and horizontal figure 8s during labor. They helped! I had to be careful with my choo choos and just getting tired out in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.

I dance at Lotus Studios in Charlotte. It's a fairly new studio, but the ladies there are GREAT!

Hey y'all! I figured I'd bump this thread.

I do have a question-

I took classes for a few months, loved it, then teacher moved a bit farther away and I got preggers and this pregnancy has been quite the roller coaster! I am on relaxed bedrest until these two arrive but I do want to start up with BD again. Here's the thing now we are moving farther (no BD classes in that area) so I'd have to drive about 45 minutes to my classes and with 5 kids 5 and under I am not seeing that happening. DH says it's ok but I'm not ok with it- at least not until the twins get older.

Do you think it is reasonable of me to continue at home with videos? Can you suggest any?

TIA! :joy:

tankgirl136
06-06-2009, 02:44 AM
magstphil- I think since you have the basics down, videos are a great way to continue dancing. I know a lot of dancers who continue with videos after taking classes for a while.

As for suggestions I think it depends on what style you are interested in. I know Rachel Brice is amazing for Tribal, I adore Ariellah for her Gothic/Tribal style and also for her use of Yoga in warm ups, I have some Caberet but I am blanking on names. You can find some cool samples on Youtube for many of the dancers too.

I have to say WOW!!! I forgot I started at 3 hours of dance on Mondays when I first got pregnant. For a while I was down to 2 hours, but sadly last month I had to finally cut back to 1 hour (especially working the Renaissance Faire on weekends). I am still trying to get in all the performance time I can now. I really hope I don't need too long of a break after giving birth because I love dancing. I also have to say Mayas, Reverse Camels and Umi's have been saving my back during this pregnancy. Yeah Belly dance!!

Agreed Rachel Brice has some great stuff especially isolations. Many of her classes can be found online in snippets so you can check out her teaching style. The Indigo are fab together but my favorite is Mardi Love she just has style, personality, and brings a playfulness that few can match.

For basics Tribal Basics by Fat Chance Bellydance is still quite good. Her attitude for me is a bit off putting, but many just love her stuff. My daughter really like Veena & Neena and their DVD's are a LOT of fun, but not good for partial bedrest, better after. My mom recently brought me a DVD of Bollywood and Bellydance and it is a blast. :) I've not danced on stage for a number of years, and then only a handful of times. My mom, daughter, and I like to dance together and are forming a very weird little min-troupe. Nice to see others on the journey of belly dance. Cheers and camel steps!

•Do you have a dance name that is not your real name? If so what does it mean to you?
•What costume and music styles do you prefer?
•If money were no object what would your dream costume be? :D

I have heard that Veena & Neena are fun. I have to say I am still so sad I missed out on taking one of Rachel Brice's classes she is such an amazing dancer. I heard from many her classes are amazing but kick your butt!!!

I love the idea of a family mini-troupe that sounds so much fun! I have to admit I was hoping for a little girl so I could have a little dancer, but it looks like we are getting a little drummer instead ;)

Great questions!!

•Do you have a dance name that is not your real name? If so what does it mean to you?- I am currently dancing as Isadora. It had a sound I liked and honestly it fit my desire to dance in many styles.

•What costume and music styles do you prefer? It depends on the day. Because I do a lot of Renaissance Faire's (though only rarely as a dancer), I love Tribal costuming. I think its great when the drums or other instruments start and you break into ATS or free style Tribal. But I also have a love for the classic caberet and Gothic. Most people in my area though think of me more for Gothic though then any other style since on stage I tend to aim that way the most.

•If money were no object what would your dream costume be? If money were no object I would have three dream costumes, a black and most likely purple irridescent beaded caberet number, with all the bling and bead I could fit :wink A gorgeous gwazi coat, and a few more fun pieces for my tribal costume, and a new over the top Goth costume. One starts with a chainmaile/fishscale bra, the other is Victorian ghost for a steampunk number.

I am also curious how long everyone has been dancing and where do you perform (stage, restaurant, student recitals, competition, etc)??

For me I have been dancing over 3 years, though I did take a 2-3 month break about a year in because of wrist and neck injuries from a car accident. I have danced on stage, at local restaurants (mostly on student nights), recitals, public shows (local faire and festival), Renaissance Faires (yeah to dancing with live musicians!), and competitions. Basically I try to dance any chance I can get, since my teacher is very into performing!

Thanks for the replies! :joy:

From what I have seen I really love tribal though that is not really what I was taught. Then again it was just the basics so I doubt that's an issue :shrug I am going to check out Rachel Brice.

My daughter really like Veena & Neena and their DVD's are a LOT of fun, but not good for partial bedrest, better after.
I have seen V&N on YouTube. They have 2 of their full vids there. I won't be doing anything until after the babes get here.

•Do you have a dance name that is not your real name? If so what does it mean to you?
Nope! I am way too new for that.

•What costume and music styles do you prefer?
I love tribal costumes and style. I love drum solos. I am sure that is not a style (so I am still a novice) but I just love those drums! My DH is looking into learning them.

•If money were no object what would your dream costume be?
Something like this (http://www.velvetpeacockdesigns.com/Ghawazee-coat.html). I'd wear it and this one (http://velvetpeacockdesigns.com/Ghawazee-Coats.html) just to wear it. :love

Almost a year ago is when I started taking lessons but that was only for a few months and I have yet to even think about preforming. I just really love belly dance so I do it for the sake of dancing. Though someday I'd like to be more into the preforming and community aspect. For now I will be in my living room with my DVD player.

I have a question, I have only taken 3 belly dance lessons (about 5 years ago) but I did not at all like my instructor everyone in my class had been doing it for years so she did not even try to help me learn the moves she just yelled when I got lost :( it was a very bad experience, can I start with videos? Will they teach me enough to dance at home? I do not plan on doing any performances EVER because I am way to shy to get in front of people so would home dvd's work?

Yes, you can learn from videos. I know many people who do. The only issue is that sometimes you hit a point were you might need help, especially so you don't learn bad habits. My suggestion start with some good beginner videos, and then look to see if any dancers are offering workshops in your area.

Workshops are fantastic because it's a few hours with a different teacher every time. You can try out new styles. And you can get great intensive training on specific things like arms, zills and other parts of dancing.

Don't worry if you are new many dancers offer beginner workshops or will allow those with minimal training to join in. I did one with Ariellah when I was a beginner and though it was tough, I am so glad I went!

I totally are workshops are good for trying out a variety of teaching styles and can be supplemented with DVD work. *hug* To be really blunt I did not care for the way my first dance teacher taught- and had a pretty limited introduction. Also, she pretty much lived by tribal being the only TRUE belly dance, which was so much dribble. Took a long while to find the teacher I blossomed with then she moved. ;) lol. Be kind to yourself, and dance your heart out! One day you may just shock yourself into wanting to dance in public. In the meantime *big hugs* you have us here to talk with. :)
Another thing and this was to get myself out home body mode I just joined meet up to find other dancers and performers in the local area. I'm eager to try one of the get together events.

I would youtube some of the names listed see if any of the dancers grab you and then see what netflicks offers.

BTW if you have fitnessTV the channel they offer a show called Shimmy that shows you moves in a workout manner. Some of the moves are actually taught really well. It is a nice way to start though.

I'll look into this Cassiopeia - sorry for the delay. My mother is a bit of a plus size dancer so when I see here today I'll ask her. Some website do carry larger hip scarves- but I think most are one size fits all. My mom has never ever had trouble fitting the regular scarves. One wonderful dancer that I met in my teens was very rubenesque and she tied two scarves together at front and back- or both sides when she wanted an easy belt. It was a lovely effect as the coins have a lot of movement, and the fabric draped beautifully. The rest of the time she wore outrageous beaded costumes that were jaw-dropping in complexity.

Hello, ladies.

I just took my first class last week and am really looking forward to going back. I asked the instructor about this, but she was clueless - are there any moves that a pregnant woman should avoid? I'm almost 12 weeks, but am interested throughout the course of the pregnancy.

Thanks.

The one move I have heard over and over to avoid is long sustained shimmies. I know personally this was one of the moves I had to stop early on since it made me feel physically uncomfortable. I do some small shimmies now but not long or intense ones, only as part of performances.

Otherwise I have found listening to my body to be the best advice. If it feels bad don't do it. On the positive side I have found mayas (figure 8's), ummies (hip circles) and reverse camels to be so helpful in relieving my hip and back pain and tension.

I am so happy that at almost 35 weeks I am still able to dance! I am paid up till I am almost 38 weeks and hope to go until baby decides to show up. I also hope I can heal fast so I can perform next month but I might just be dreaming hahahha!

Hi Ladies -

Another dancer here. I started out about 4 years ago learning cabaret style, but then took a tribal workshop and have been doing that for the last 3 years. I really fell in love with the lead and follow format so that I can always dance to any song without needing a set choreography.

I actually dropped classes over the summer thinking I was going to miss too many of them due to the overload of summer activities, then found out I was pregnant! Two weeks ago I went to a class and it really kicked my butt. This first trimester (I'm at 10 weeks) is making it hard to stay active. I plan to get back into full classes once I can get motivated to move again.

It just so happens that a fellow bellydance friend of mine is also a doula. I'm seriously considering hiring her for my birth. Maybe we can dance around my living room until the baby comes. :wink

Best wishes to all!

Awesome. I'm another belly dancer. Actually, I teach belly dancing at a local rec center. I took over for my former instructor Elisheba Zoheret of Golden Veils. I'm a member of Dancers of the Harem in Marietta, Georgia. There have been a couple of articles about our troupe in dance magazines recently. We were in Belly Dance last summer. Anyway, I've been dancing for 7 years. We perform at senior centers and retirement homes. Some of our troupe dance in restaurants although I don't because it makes my dh uncomfortable to dance for tips. We do festivals occasionally as well. I was out of it for awhile when I had my twins then went back to teaching when I was pregnant with my last baby. My dance name is Nadirah Manal and it means precious achievement. Seems there are a lot of people here from California.

Our troupe has been fairly busy this spring/summer. We have danced at a club for a burlesque and belly dance night, a big community festival, and are hosting a pretty big event in a couple weeks that will feature dancers from all over Ohio. We will dance too of course, tribal fusion being our main style. One of our favorite songs lately that we have been dancing too is Illumination by Thievery Corportation. It is great! Anyone else like Thievery Corporation, to listen to??
I love Velvet Peacock Design!! I bought a skirt from her and love it! And can wear anywhere, not just for dancing! Our troupe loves melodia's and we have all been wearing them and then whatever else for the top. My dream costume would be something by Shahlah Craft Designs. And if money were abundant I'd totally get some cool, vintage, ethnic tribal jewelry!
My sister lives in Denver and takes lessons from Suzanna Delvecchio(if I spelled that right). I can't say enough about her videos! They are wonderful tools for learning and practicing dance.
Cheers and happy shimmying!

Not sure if can find these at Netflix, but two of my favorite beginning bellydance cd's are: The Goddess Workout by Dolphina and Bellydance basics and beyond with Jenna.

As far a pregnancy bellydance dvd's I'm really in love with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Amiras-Belly-Pregnancy-Prenatal-Exercise/dp/B001W2HZ1C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1251145048&sr=8-3

I think you should be fine, I know a lot of people who keep up dancing till late in their pregnancy. I actually went to class and did a free dance at a performance days before I gave birth. I felt great dancing!

I have to say I am antsy to get back to dancing. I was bad and went and did two songs at a performance 5 days after I had my son. I really want to get back to dance classes, but I am not sure about leaving my DS for the hour since he is exclusively breastfed. I miss it a lot.

*BUMP*

Just wanted to say that I hadn't signed up for classes during my first tri. I did a drop in class and was exhausted at the end of it. So glad I didn't pay for a series. But now I'm in my second tri so I signed up for classes again and have had two so far. I'm loving it!

Not dancing for 3 months did affect me. I don't remember moves as well and my dance posture took a hit for the worse. Hopefully I'll gain it all back.

What about you ladies? Still dancing?

I am on the other side, at 4 weeks post partum I started back to classes. I could have gone back sooner physically but I could not leave my DS until I was ready to start doing a bottle of EBM. It was a bit hard at first leaving him but I loved being back in class!

I hope I have time to get in some practice and a class this week while MIL and BIL are in town, since I will be performing my first solo back next week, I will be just past 6 weeks post partum, I think most of my costume will fit but I do need a new temporary bra.

I think in your second trimester you really will enjoy class more, 1st was hard for me to be motivated some times, I was so tired.

Tank girl - congrats on your first PP solo! I've been wondering if my choli will still fit in a few months. I'm sure my cotton one won't, but the velvet has so much stretch.

Any videos of your dancing on YouTube?

Here's my latest, before I was pregnant, at a student salon:
