We usually go to Charlton orchards in Charlton since we have friends who lived in Charlton - they just moved to Worcester though, lol, it's about 30min from Worc up Rt 20 headed towards Sturbridge. They have a small stand with fruits and veggies and baked goods. Oh and cider and wine :) I've also heard good things about Brookfield orchards in East Brookfield but haven't been there... yet, think we'll try them soon since we're right in Cherry Valley (Leicester) so it's not too far.

In Bolton there is the Nashoba Valley Winery and Niecwisz Farm. We went picking at the winery today.

I loved Charlton Orchards (http://www.charltonorchard.com/)for Blueberry picking this year! They have apples, too; don't know if I'm going to make it, though. I love the feel of the place, and the farm stand was wonderful!

We've gone to Berlin Orchards (http://www.berlinorchards.com/)which takes you out on a little hayride and was fun. We just picked blueberries at Charlton Orchards this summer and loved the feel of the place. I'd definitely go back there for apples, too.

I wasn't impressed with Nashoba Valley; they were more interested in selling wine and had guards watching the peaches....it was full of rules and just made it less fun.

There's also Marshall Farms in Fitchburg, and Tougas Farms in Northboro. We're trying Tougas this year with my mom's group.

I've been several times to a place just over the border into New Hampshire where they let the kids tour their cider press and have a whole playground set up along with the apple picking. Its been fun. Alas I do not remember the name of the place but maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about.

I live in Bolton - lots of apple picking here, and in neighboring Harvard. But I believe the only pick your own organic apple orchard in Mass. is located in Harvard at the Old Frog Pond Farm (http://www.oldfrogpondfarm.com/). Organic isn't important to some people - but while pregnant, I'm trying to stick to as much organic as possible, and since it was on my mind, I thought I'd toss it out there.

We've gone to Tougas, Brookfield and years ago, Bolton Orchards. It really depends on what you are looking for. Tougas is good if you like a fairly nice playground to go after you pick. Brookfield was nice - it has a crowded but cute country store. Have fun! :)

All this talk about apple picking makes me think I should take my 15 month old on his first fruit picking adventure. Any recommendations on a farm closer to Boston that would be appropriate for a 15 month old? I would prefer a place that is organic but I understand that Old Frog Pond is closed for the season...any other place we should try?

Thanks!
Cindy

We go to Tougas for you-pick from spring to fall.
They also have a playground, hayrides to the orchards on the weekends, and a petting zoo area with goats and chickens.

We went to Tougas on Sunday morning. Was a good time, but very crowded. If you go, I recommend going early (they open at 10AM). When we left at 1:30 the line of cars waiting to go in was backed up all the way to 290! Crazy...

Picked up a lot of baked goods. The apple pie is amazing & DH said the apple crisp was good too (I'll have some of that tonight). Donuts are ok, but I like the ones from The Big Apple better.

Whoa, that is a line of traffic for Tougas!

I would think though that any orchard would be packed this weekend. It's peak picking week combined with gorgeous weather, and a long weekend to boot.

And I think you're right about going in the morning. We went last weekend maybe around noon? There was no backup on the road, but the place was still very busy. All lots were filled, but we foudn a space easily. By the time we left about 1:30 or 2 maybe, it was backed up half way to the main road.
