I'm brand new to this forum (was recommended by someone on LiveJournal.com), so my apologies in advance if this isn't up-to-par.

I'm looking for a pediatrician/family doctor recommendation for the (preferably northwest) suburbs of Chicago. We're located in the Elk Grove/Schaumburg area, so a lot is convenient to us, thankfully. I'd love to find a doctor that is okay with a modified vaccination schedule and doesn't always push prescriptions.

I'm just 14 weeks pregnant, so I have some time for this, but I thought the earlier I start, the better.

I've found the Homefirst physicians but haven't heard any feed back on them. Any input on the group?

Welcome to MDC and congrats on your pregnancy!

If you are willing to travel I recommend Dr. Minkus. He's very pro-breastfeeding, open to any preferred vax schedule, ap friendly, loving and worth the wait for an appointment as he spends lots of time with you during each appointment. http://www.healthgrades.com/directory_search/physician/profiles/dr-md-reports/dr-robert-minkus-md-53c02610.cfm

Here are recent threads with other NW Chicago suburban peds.

I don't think Dr. Minkus is accepting new patients anymore. :(

Dr. Elvove in Libertyville is excellent and he has a website.

Homefirst is always recommended here.

Check Dr. Sears' (Bob) website, too. He has a referral section.

Whew! I just got off the phone with his office and fortunately he is still taking new patients. It will be a sad day when he retires.

I don't know about that. I know a few people who have been less-than-thrilled with them for a variety of reasons, including their concierge fee and some of the doctors, and I know I've read a number of threads here with negative (as well as positive) things to say about Homefirst. I don't have any experience with them, but just do a search in this forum, and you'll come up with a lot of feedback, both positive and negative.

I love Dr. Ettner in Evanston, but based on your location I would think Dr. Minkus (in Skokie) would be a lot more convenient, and really, not that much of a hike from Elk Grove/Schaumburg.

Good luck!

LOL Dr. Minkus was MY pedi when I was a kid! I would take my sons to him but he's on the other side of the city and I really like where I take the boys anyways. :thumb

You are so lucky to have had him as your doctor! He's been in practice for 37 years and he must continue at least another 20 years or so for my son and friend's children! :lol

Funny - And Dr. Ettner, who I take DD to, delivered several of my cousins in home births (he no longer attends births, but used to), who are now in their 30s. I think he started practicing the year after I was born, or he probably would have delivered me at my mom's home birth too (I'm 34).
Someone's going to have to step up and replace these doctors when they do retire!
