I am in northwestern ontario and always seem to be far away from everything and everyone else. Are there other people on these boards from the same region? It would be cool to have people to discuss things with who are in the same area because the culture and issues are different here than in Southern Ontario and other places. I look forward to hearing from others.

I saw this thread and felt bad that no one had replied. I'm not currently living in Northwestern Ontario (or Canada for that matter), but I grew up in Fort Frances. I think Northwestern Ontario is so beautiful and vastly under rated. :treehugger: I hope some people see this thread!

Hi, thank you for posting a message! I feel bad that no one has replied as well! I know the fort, i have family there and also in the falls. My mother was from the falls. This region is very beautiful, and yes, i agree, underated, odd how that is, hmmmm. Are you in the USA now?

Where abouts are you mama?? I'm in Northwestern Ontario too. =) i plan on living here forever....

i haven't come across many mamas in the area though. It seems a little more redneck here than anything, lol.

what is your defination of redneck? If you mean stuck in the 80's mulletors, with pick up trucks and their "Robins" coffee, well I see what you are saying LOL! I do not really like the "Thunder Bay" accent either, often i hear people speaking lazy, as in not finishing the word. They sound drunk, i really hate that. Someone pointed that out in me once and i was mortified! Needless to say, i am aware of that now and do not do it.

I do however, like some of the LU alumni who are both intellectual and crunchy, i have a few friends who are like that. I would love to meet more folks. I spend far too much time just with kids, I love them, but my brain is turning to mush!

Don't get me wrong, there are all sorts of great people here and a pretty cool little arts community that is starting to thrive. many areas in this region are so beautiful and have amazing energy. It really is underrated, we have crystal and amythest all around here, beautiful lake superior, a bay, the iron range mountains circling the city, i can see Thunder mountain out of my window as I write this, not to mention the sleeping giant and marina park. Most people will say hello to you on the street, even when they have never seen you before. It can be very nice here. Anywho, I am off. Take care

Hi from North Bay, often confused with Thunder Bay by Southern Ontarians. The first snow of the season is just melting away in the sun today, so all outside is green and white. Have you had snow yet?

(Does North Bay, the "Gateway to the North" qualify as Northern Ontario??)

I suppose it does. I drove through there once, on my way to Ottawa. It looked like a nice place. It must be difficult being there, i mean it is closer to the big cities, does it feel like your town is always in the shadow of toronto?

As for us, we are more isolated. It can be a good and a bad thing. The good part is that we do not have bad air quality like the toronto region, the bad is that not a lot of money is alloted for us, so our city often has to go without.

What is the general culture like where you are?

Hey all, I'm in Hearst right now. Hubby works in Hornepayne and is gone Mon-Fri. We used to live in Cochrane and I went to college in Kirkland Lake. I grew up just north of Toronto tho. Do I qualify?
Never been to Thunder Bay. Furtherest west was Nakina, but we have family in Long Lac and Geralton. We keep talking about taking a vacation to Thunder Bay. We hear its beautiful.

As for our general culture: its very mainstream not so much redneck; they like to think they are very cosmopolitian, very french, very small town (altho Hearst like to think its a city :)) We don't really have the resources of the bigger places and we are too isolated (but I think that is par for the course in Northern Ontario).

I'm in Key West, FL of all places. Talk about different! I have dreams of maybe one day returning to live in Northwestern Ontario but I don't know how feasible that would be, especially being that I had to go and marry someone who is "allergic to snow" :lol
Who knows, though, maybe global warming will work out in my favour.:wink

Oh how i wish to go to Florida! Clearwater was my mother's fravorite place. I wish to visit there in memory of her some time in the future. I bet they have incredible veggie and fruit markets there.

My mom was american, but gave up her citizenship for a man, my dad. I wish she hadn't as she was more happy being with her sisters. They eventually split and she got stuck here.

It is very sad, the power of invisible lines, our claim on sections of the earth, "This is mine, that is yours," that sorta thing.

Of course you qualify Sahmama! Are you happy over there?

I had no idea that Kirkland lake had a college, how cool! I hear people talk about Hearst some times, i have never been there and know nothing about the place. Most people mentioning it are French. I am going to google the place, i am interested now.

Yes, Thunder Bay is beautiful. It would be a nice place to visit. On Wednesday evenings in the summer, there is a free concert at Marina Park, so many people go. I have had many great times there. I do not know if you are someone who lives simply, I myself, try to keep it simple. It is not difficult to have that lifestyle here.

Momto S, winter's without snow would be nice, yes. I do think that I personally would miss it after a little while.

It is always something, if there isn't snow, there is rain, or earthquakes, or something. I think snow can be rather minor. Cold sucks, but i see it as a trade off.

How far north are you?
