Pediatrician for Providence, Southfield, MI

I am looking for a pediatrician that has rights at Providence Hospital Alternative Birth Center in Southfield, MI. Looking for someone who is supportive of breast feeding and is not super aggressive if I were to test positive for GBS. I have HAP insurance. Does anyone know of any good peds?

I used Dr.Kaza(sp?) Trish recommended her. We only used her as the primary doctor to sign off on Taegan so she could leave but she was fine with the whole no vax/eye goop thing. Because Trish recommended her I would trust that she has a good rep.

He was very hands off, didn't care whether we vaxed or not, said he recommends certain ones, but its the parents decision and we never felt an ounce of pressure to. Not sure about GBS stuff.

No direct experience with GBS, but I'd give Dr. Lax my "vote" as well based on our experiences with him since my kids' births.

If you are with the Metro Partners midwives, I'd definitely ask them, I asked about the GBS issue specifically and Mary mentioned that she'd pass me a few recs of docs who don't give you a hard time if you refuse abx. I haven't even gone to the orientation yet so I haven't really got the names yet. She did mention Dr. Lax as one of them, though.

We (my son and I) have been seeing Dr. Lax since my son was born in Jan 2006. I can say that he is good about an intact penis (we haven't had any issues, but he doesn't try to retract).

He's also supportive of breastfeeding for the first year. He clipped my ds' tongue-tie, which meant the difference between breastfeeding and FF for us.

I would say that he is more of a selective/delayed vax friendly doc though. I have heard lectures about vax from him.

I like Dr. David Schindler. He is in Novi but I know that he does go to the ABC. I don't have much experience with him, except that I've met him and talked to him about delayed/selective vax, etc. He said a lot of his patients don't vax or do so delayed/selective. He was really nice and informative. His office got me in pretty quickly to see him when I was interviewing pediatricians. He is a family doc too. I don't know what his stance is on GBS, but it wouldn't hurt to ask him. I have heard good things about Dr. Lax too. In fact, it was one of the midwives from Metro Partners who told me about Dr. Schindler and Dr. Lax being very open to "alternative" approaches.

I have heard from other MDC moms that he's good about not vaxing though.

just wanted to chime in. we weren't in love with Lax, but he wasn't awful or anything. we started seeing Schindler after Lax told me to "see a therapist and get over it," when dd1 went on a nursing strike at 8mos :irked:. certainly no dr's perfect, but that was a particularly insensitive thing to say when i was in an extremely emotionally fragile state.

IME they're both pretty indifferent about BFing (seeming to think BFing is good, but formula's ok too), but Schindler has better bedside manner. he's (schindler) also great about offering alternatives. he's done hypnosis for me a few times for various things (like morning sickness--worked really great!) and is just generally very open minded and easy to talk to. hth!

eta: schindler is very no pressure about vaxing. at well child visits, he simply makes sure we're still not vaxing and moves on to the next topic. no lectures, no guilt.

Wow, sorry you had such an issue with Dr. Schindler and breastfeeding. I only met him once and he seemed so kind and holistic...I'm surprised he wouldn't be more supportive of breastfeeding. Then again, he is an MD. Even the most "alternative" practitioners can be jaded by their medical backgrounds, I suppose.

I agree that Dr. Schindler has a good bedside manner and is very open minded and easy to talk to. When I first made the appointment to meet with him, it was because I was going to birth at the ABC. At a prenatal before meeting with him, I was told that I could no longer birth there due to my weight (seemingly coming from a higher-up). I still wanted to interview him as a pediatrician because I had heard good things about him.

When I went in and explained my situation to him (that I was suddenly not a candidate for the ABC anymore due to my weight and new policies or whatever), he was aghast. He used to deliver out of the ABC himself and said something like, "I would deliver you there if I delivered babies now." I told him of my plans for homebirth and he was incredulous. It's not that he wasn't supportive of homebirth. He was just amazed that I didn't have any other options other than a standard labor/delivery room or homebirth. He was genuinely upset about it and called the ABC to ask if they now had a "weight restriction." He wanted to find out the whole deal and he wanted me to know that he felt it was wrong that I had to choose a homebirth instead of the ABC. He said as long as I was close to a hospital, it would probably be fine. (Obviously a medical-minded MD, no matter how alternative, is going to have biases against certain things...his reaction was far more accepting of homebirth than I ever thought an MD's would be. He was just upset I had to choose homebirth to get the birth I wanted.)

In retrospect, I am SO happy I have chosen homebirth. So it all worked out. I just wanted the OP to know that I believe Dr. Schindler does really care. He had just met me and was upset for me!

I'm sorry Jennifer's experience with him and breastfeeding wasn't the greatest. :(
