Hi all. I'm shopping for a new vacuum and I was wondering what there is to say about the dyson. Do you have one or have you had one? What did/do you think about it? I'm fed up with unclogging the filters on my Eureka... it's time for a change.

Opinions appreciated!

We have the pet ball one, and we like it a lot. It is easy to meneuver (sp?), picks up the hair really well, and is super easy to empty. And no clogs. It also has easy access points in case you do clog up the beater bar or something. Really handy.

Of course shortly after we got it we moved to a house that only has carpeting in two rooms, so we don't use it a whole lot anymore. I still love it though.

Personally, I would rather pay more upfront and get quality than buy something cheaper and have to replace it a bunch of times. For us, it is worth the extra money.

I know that a couple of other brands have come out with Dyson-esque vaccuums without filters that are cheaper, but I am really not sure how they compare.... they came out after we got out Dyson.

I have a DC 14 (yellow). I like it. It doesn't have as strong of suction as I thought it would (the floor part, not the hose part) but it is sufficient. I've had mine for 2.75 years and there is something making noise in the motor, which I will probably have my dh look at, but in the meantime it's not affecting it's performance.

I have a Consumer Reports magazine from a few years ago that has reviews for vacuum cleaners in it. Their highest rated was Kenmore (sears) progressive with direct drive. Other good ones were Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra, Electrolux Oxygen^3, Hoover Windtunnel Bagless. The DC15 was rated #6, the DC7 was rated #13, and DC14 was rated #14.

If I had to do it over again, I would have looked into the cheaper vacuums, but the Dyson does work really well for jobs I need it for (cleaning guinea pig cages).

Completely agree with this. Our old vacuum recently bit the bullet and we bought the new DC 24 and I LOVE IT. We have a dog who sheds a lot and have two toddlers and this thing cleans like you wouldn't believe. We always thought out last vacuum did a decent job but now after vacuuming a room the room just smells and feels cleaner than before and it is very easy to use. Plus I love that it has a five year parts and labor warranty.

totally agree that the dyson was worth every penny. we have the slim and got a good deal using a bed bath and beyond 20% off coupoun.

even though it was pricey up front I feel like we are saving money over the long run not buying bags (we have pets and always went through a lot).

we have had it for 1.5 yrs and no problems yet.

Best vacuum I've ever had. I have the animal one, no ball. Before it I'd go through a cheap vac in about a year before it would break or just be too frustrating to use anymore. The dyson works well, it's super easy to unclog if you accidently suck up something huge, and just really well designed.

I totally agree with it being worth every penny. I have the original (ummm....blue....or teal? lol) and I luuuuv it. I hated how every time I'd vacuum before the dyson, I'd have to unclog the stupid things. The dyson has clogged *once* when my husband used it and decided he didn't need to pick up big things off the floor. So easy to take care of. No bent coat hangers or knitting needles involved! :D

Yep, exactly. We have the animal, no ball. Divinity compared to any other vacuum we have ever owned.

Awesome. I'm soooo going to show DH all your comments when he gets out of bed. And then I'm calling Sears.

If you haven't purchased yet. This week, well ending today I believe...at Target they have the Pink Dyson (the one that supports Breast Cancer Research) for $399 and you get a $100 Target card for FREE!

I've had the an animal/allergy one since last Christmas. I do like it, it picks up everything everything everything but...it's heavy as hell. And you can't get UNDER anything with it. It's such a bulky machine you have to use the attachments or just the hose thing to get under the couch, the beds, the tv table, etc. I also don't love the way the bare floor attachment works. It's just akward.

I don't think you can get a better vaccuum overall, and I've had dozens of vacs in my short lifetime. But there's always SOMETHING that could be better, and for me, the weight and bulk of it is the biggest drawback.

We have the DC14. It is probably the best thing I have ever purchased for our home. I love love LOVE the telescopic handle!! Our dog sheds so much and this thing has been a godsend. It is fairly quiet & lightweight compared to other vaccuums I have owned. I officially knew I was an "adult" when I was happy with spending $400 on a vaccuum.

We bought the turqouise Dyson from Walmart (DC I think) and it is worth it for sure! We have a dog and a toddler and I burned out every other vacuum in less than a year. This one is a breeze to empty (great if you're like me and have dust mite allergies). No changing of the filters, no dust flying around when you vacuum. Def worth it!

Initially I really loved mine---but then the curve parts--that snap on & off on bottom side--stopped holding their seal--I had to tape around rim to keep the suction---And the bottom---floor part doesn't seem to suck as well & it has nothing to do w/ the hose---maybe it just needs repair or a tune-up.

I ended up using a basic shop vac--because Dyson wasn't working which was frustrating considering the price.

I might buy another--or I might consider a miele--not sure @ their track record though. (The pink one at Target to benefit breast cancer w/ $100 card sounds like a great deal!)

my mom has a dyson and she really loves it! we have a miele and are so thrilled with it!

BUT we each have very different needs.....so i suggest figuring out what your needs are first, and then purchasing a vacuum that will fit your specific needs. i'm not a fan of the "one size fits all" approach to things......but that's just me! :wink

Countrymom- we lost the floor part, and I called dysona dn they immeadiately sent me a new one, didn't have to pay shipping or anything (and we had a refurbished one, we hadn't even bought new). So seriously, call them, they will give you a new part!

That said, I have been happy with mine. I have the DC7 I think. Consumer Reports doesn't rank Dyson's too high, but they are more heavily weighted towards price than some other reviewers (IMO). If you are in the market for a truly high end vac, I have heard Miele's are really good.

I have the DC14 Complete and love it. I have no problem getting mine under things, it came with attachments that allow me to get into darn near everything. It rocks, seriously.

I bought a Dyson years ago, a DC07, and hated it. Here's my review on epinions (http://www99.epinions.com/content_162481671812). Hopefully the Dysons have had significant improvements since then.

we've had the dyson animal for several years now and i love love love it. with 3 kids and 5 indoor animals (3 cats, one 160+lb dog and one small but very sheddy dog), it picks up more animal hair and yuck from the floor than any other vacuum we've ever had, and it's still running strong. we bought one for my mom for christmas last year and she loves hers, too. she had one issue (can't remember what it was) and called dyson- they were super helpful on the phone and sent her a new part the next day.

We've had our for 3-4 years, we got the Costco one it came with the "animal" attachments.

I can't say enough wonderful things about it.

When we got it we did a test we vaccumed our sons room with our old hoover (now in fairness that vac was dying) then revac'ed with the Dyson. Oh it was soooo gross we filled the canister by vaccuming just the one bedroom that had just been gone over with the old vac. That sealed the deal for me right there.

Worth. Every. Penny.

Yes, this. We have the cheaper yellow one and *love* it. It still works as well today (2 years later) as it did the day it was new...unlike every other vaccum we have ever had.

And honestly, we only bought it because it had the longest warrantee period of any vacuum in our price range. I was sick and tired of having to replace vacuums within 1-2 years.

I had the yellow one, I got a factory refurbished, so it was cheaper, and didn't have the long warranty. After 3 years the motor burned out (I did use it A LOT). I didn't have a lot of extra money at the time I was replacing it so I just bought a moderately priced Bissell that I read a few good reviews on. I regret it so much!! I miss my Dyson so bad! I hate this new vacuum. I should have just gone for it! The Dyson was the only vacuum I ever had that made me actually look forward to vacuuming. It doesn't smell like a vacuum. You don't have to touch the dirt at all. It's so awesome.

We just bought a Dyson 2 weeks ago (the DC 24), I really love it, it moves easily and is quite lightweight. Its nice and compact to store in our small apartment too.
It was worth the money.

We love ours as well! We got a friends and family discount through Dh's friend a dyson rep. Make friends with your local rep at bestbuy or something? the discount is worth it.

I've had a DC 14 for 2 years now. I'll never own anything else! I've got a big hairy dog (crazy undercoat), I have long hair and now with DS, we need the carpets really clean. Works beautifully!

We just got a new Dyson Absolute DC 17. I am so thrilled with it! So excited that I had to hunt down this forum to share. ;) It works better than any vacuum I've ever used, and it was pretty nasty to see what our old vacuum cleaner had just recently missed. So I'm happy to have healthier carpets and air around here. It's also very easy to clean and maneuver. Yay!:joy:

Of course shortly after we got it we moved to a house that only has carpeting in two rooms, so we don't use it a whole lot anymore. I still love it though.

We only have carpet on our stairs. We use our Dyson on our wood laminate floors and the kitchen floor and...works much better than sweeping which tends to just push things around/stir things up.

I would recommend getting a factory refurbished one (like we did). You can't tell it isn't brand new but you save a bit of $$$ (got ours on Amazon).

When we first got it we took it over to a friend's place (they had carpet). They vacuumed their family room with their vacuum first. Then we went back over it with the Dyson. We managed to pick up *quite a bit.*

ETA: Totally shallow reason for loving it: the colors! Mine is pink. :D

I bought mine four years or more ago. I agonized for weeks about spending that much on a vacumn. I drove DH insane. We bought the purple one (animal attachments) on sale but it was still as much as I've paid for most of the cars I'd owned until then...

to agree with pp's... worth every penny.

Until then I'd been buying a new vacumn every year or two, getting cheapish models that didn't work well and broke fast.

I've never had a problem with it (knock wood), it cleans wonderfully and I do actually enjoy vacuming most days... just satisfying knowing that I got every bit of dirt off the floor that could possibly be sucked up with a vacumn... emptying right into the bin with no waste and fuss changing bags... I don't recommend many things but I definitely do recommend Dyson's to anyone in the market.
