Anyone here live in the Kootenays , Nelson area. Im planning to move there one day and hopefully soon. my earlier plans to move there with the family have been pushed back.:( one thing Ive noticed about the area....finding a place to rent is soooo hard. I want to buy eventually but would like to rent first to check out where exactly we want to be. In Nelson or outside of the city?? If anyone has some thought on this I would love to hear from you.:joy:

I think it depends either on whether your car has great winter tires or not:) There are some fantastic areas around nelson (the slocan valley is beautiful), but getting yourself around in the winter can be nerve-wracking.
Ditto that thought - even though it's warmer here than the rockies, the roads are worse due to frequent black ice, especially with all the shaded areas and corners.
If you like to walk places, then being in Nelson would be nicer, there's lots going on, eg. playgroups, Waldorf school, etc. But if you don't mind driving everywhere then I agree there's some amazing areas nearby. We're an hour away from Nelson and I often make a trip in just for some interesting shopping.

Hi
I live in Nelson (having moved April 1 from Vancouver-ish, and missing my board-buddies greatly :throb)
It is darn-near impossible to find a rental here. Especially something decent for a family. Definitely nothing less than $1000/month, I bet you'd be in the 1200-1400 range for a two-three bedroom, if you're looking for something clean and bright.
It's a bit easier to find rentals outside of the city, and there's a huge population of people living within 45 minutes of Nelson in every direction. Although there are other towns (Winfield, Castlegar, Salmo) Nelson seems to be the hub of economic activity. But there are lots of interesting festivals, activites, community centers (not just buildings, but people) and what not in the surrounding areas.
Also, lots & LOTS of Alberta transplants. ;)
Good luck.
You can check out ilovenelson.com for some rental listings.

Thank you,... to all of you. Ive looked for accom. in Nelson and YEAH it is very hard. I was in Nelson last week and noticed that prices in realestate have gone up as well as the rentals. I like the Winlaw area and thinking of moving there till I can get closer to town when my girl starts school. We are interested in the Waldorf school.:treehugger:
