Talk me through this. A lot of bfing info from legit places like Dr. Sears, Kellymom and LLL say that some gas producing foods (cabbage, beans) can make nurslings gassy. Why is that? I know that the gas is a byproduct of the bacteria in the gut breaking down the sugars/fiber in these foods. But HOW does that affect breastmilk? And why would a nursling have that kind of reaction when the sugars and fiber are not (as far as I know) getting into their gut? What's with that??

I wonder the same thing because I have read other sources that say it isn't true. Do you suppose it is just coincidental?

I don't think it's a coincidence. My whole family ate beans yesterday for 2 meals and since I've been on a TED, it's the first time I reintroduced them. Everyone is gassy, incl. the baby. He doesn't seem to b e in pain, he is just very, very, um, windy!

Not positive about the beans question... but as far as cole plants: cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts- they contain a chemical called sulfurophane that makes you fart! Heck, beans might have it too or something similar...

That is a really interesting question. We need to get some scientists on the Allergy boards to help us out!!
