Canning jars.... where to buy?

Where is the best place to buy canning jars? I went to Vons, target, walmart and albertsons and Albertson's was the only shop with any canning stuff. They were $11-$13 for a set of 12. That seems a bit steep to me.

Thanks

Well they are expensive, I think the cheapest new set I bought was like $9 once, but on average would expect to pay $11 or so.

I've bought most of mine at the thrift store, have found cases for like $5 each. I have also got a bunch for free, craigslist, freecycle and a friend once brought me 5 jelly jar cases he found in the alley next to the dumpster.

It can be an investment.

As for another place to check would be at Ace Hardware/ True Value stores. The more "old time" hardware stores almost always carry these items. I've bought a lot of my lids at Ace personally.

You might check Big Lots. I saw cases of jars, though I can't recall the price.

Walmart definitely has some they are by the cooking stuff like pots, pans and baking dishes. Vons should have some and it'll be with their baking stuff like flour and sugar, but Walmart will probably be cheaper $7-10 depending on what size you are getting.

Its getting to be past major canning season (at least around here) so they're mostly not on sale anymore which means they're around $13 or so.. on sale in-season you can usually find them for $10 at walmart/drugmart/dollar store.
