The Family Bed and Nighttime Parenting Welcome to The Family Bed and Nighttime Parenting forum. This forum is intended to serve this advocacy and support and encourage parents in co-sleeping, even through the difficulties that arise. When a parent posts here to discuss struggles with co-sleeping and asks for advice members should post with suggestions to ease problems and encouragement to support co-sleeping, not to advise against it. Posts of that nature are not appropriate. If parents come to a decision that their child sleeps better in his or her own space, discussions here can be in support of how to best parent such a child at night in a nurturing way.

I am a human pacifier...help!

My son is 20-months-old and shows no sign of slowing up in regards to nursing and night nursing especially. He is currently getting 8 teeth in (eye teeth and molars on top and bottom) and I think this has something to do with it. He wants to sleep attached to my breast ALL NIGHT LONG! When I try to detach him to move him over he cries and wakes up. Is this a phase or a new habit forming? I did all the "right" things in regards to breastfeeding, but now I am wishing he was attached to a pacifier. We also want to start trying for number 2 but because he is nursing so much at night I can't get pregnant. Anyone have helpful hints for night-weaning? My husband lacks the confidence to take over nighttime duties and he works, so this would be difficult for him.

I cant offer much help, only posting to tell you I am with you. My dd is nearly 13 months and does the same, though not nightly. She has 4 teeth already in, and 3 that just came in.
Some nights are horrible because she wont unattach at all....if I unattach her, she crys till I let her reattach. I just hate not being able to roll over...makes my back hurt most nights. (DD sleeps between us or she would fall out of the bed.)

I have tried unattaching and slipping a pacifier in her mouth. But shes never liked pacifiers and it just makes her really mad.

A friend of mine told me she read about counter pressure...meaning, when you go to unattach baby, you gently push up on the chin while removing nipple. I groggely tried it 1 time and it worked. She said it takes some time to get the move down right but it has worked for her as well.

If anyone else has any advice, Im interested too!

I went through something kind of simliar with my dd, who is now 4.5. I eventually did use a paci for her (which she is still using... ugh, but I swear it made the night sleep MUCH better). I would recommend trying to sleep on separate surfaces (maybe him on a mattress and you on a floor right next to him), or him on a mattress on the floor of your room. He is also old enough that you can try to establish some rules like only nursing when it's light out. The other thing I tried with dd was when she would wake up I would tell her I had to go to the bathroom and I'd go "hide out" there for a few minutes and sometimes she'd be back asleep when I got back. I tried those Hylands teething tablets-- they seemed to help a bit. I know how awful it is. If your sone is 20 months, you're in the home stretch. In the next 6 months-1 year, I am sure you will be sleeping much better! Hang in there, I know how bad it is.
