Looking for more natural means to help my 10 month old who has H1N1.
Yes I know...another H1N1 thread. Sorry!
My 10 month old has H1N1. Any advise on natural methods I can try? Currently we are on tamiflu and tylenol and motrin. I hate medicating her.....but the fever has me a bit worried. 103F before meds.
Any advise?
I hate seeing her so sick.

After reading up on H1N1 the things that seem to be key are garlic, garlic, garlic, vitamin D, vitamin C, and good sleep.
Personally, I am very much not a fan of tylenol because it can cause liver damage. Has your LO recieved the vaccine? If so, Tylenol has been suspected of weakening the vaccine. (I'm not one for vaccines )
Rub crushed garlic on your LO's feet, if you are still nursing eat *lots* of raw garlic (I crush it and then take it like a pill), supplement your diet with extra vit D (around 5,000IU's/day only while sick) and put LO in direct sunlight for at least 15 minutes/per day for vit D, up your vit C intake naturally with grapefruits, lemons, & oranges and you can also take extra vit C in the form of powdered sodium ascorbate- can be giving to LO in *very* small amounts in water or BM (too much can cause diarrhea), & good sleep.
Please look up cytokine storm response and make yourself aware of which foods *may* cause it (it is still not fully understood) and which foods help to reduce it.
Personally, I believe diet is the key with the H1N1. The supposed "healthy" people dying from it do not have a good diet, they all eat SAD and once you think it is gone do not stop what you are doing to get rid of it. A reoccurance of it is what is usually lethal or if it goes into the lungs ending in pneumonia or bronchitis.
Also, keep in mind a fever is there to kill the virus. Of course it it gets too high it can cause serious damage but if your LO is not bothered by it it probably isn't high enough to worry. It's when they are lethargic and delirious you need to worry.
The only reason why H1N1 is being hyped is because it is a new strain, kind of, and most people have not been exposed to it giving them natural ammunity to it. As a side note... If you are over 50yo chances are you will not get H1N1 because of the 1918 flu outbreak exposure but, there are a lot of us who aren't over 50 so there will be alot of cases of H1N1.
HTH and healing thoughts for your LO

Oh, you can also give gelsemium and oscillococcinum for the flu

Thank you very much!
We opted not to get the vaccine....I'm not a fan of flu shots for my own reasons.
I will see if I can go out tomorrow and get the vitamins and herbs you recommended.

The upper safe limit of Vitamin D for kids under 1 year of age is 1,000 IU per day so I would definitely do no less than that (and personally, I'd probably do much more.) Vitamin D may help prevent flu and may help someone recover more quickly. www.vitamindcouncil.org

In addition to what everyone said, I'd also suggest Belladonna for fever (instead of Tylenol/Motrin) and only if she's uncomfortable/unable to rest from the fever. I swear by elderberry too (but NOT the kind with echinacea). Hope she feels better soon.

My husband and I fought off H1N1 when our kids had it by doing Sodium Ascorbate to bowel limit, and the Master Tonic. You can search the forum's threads for more info on those.
103 isn't too high of a fever, and her body may recover better if you let it use the fever to bake the virus. That's what fevers are for! That said, I always medicate for comfort. My son starts getting really uncomfortable around 103.5, so that's when I end up giving him a dose. But I try to hold off unless he's really uncomfortable.

Rub crushed garlic on your LO's feet
|
How do you do that exactly? Do you put it in something first? I am getting a visual of smearing a bunch of garlic on the bottom of ds's feet and making a big mess......
I have heard lots of good things about garlic so am eager to incorporate this into our cold and flu care.

SAD is the standard American diet -
High in animal fats, high in unhealthy fats: saturated, hydrogenated, low in fiber, high in processed foods, low in complex carbohydrates, low in plant-based foods.

I crush the garlic with my knife and rub the crushed clove on the bottoms of the feet a few times/day.
Also, astragalus tea helps. I make a weak cup of tea and give DD (9months) a couple drops a day. DS gets a stronger cup with peppermint to make it taste good.

Interesting that you mention astragalus. I just purschased some astragalus in liquid form, and was going to post a question on dosing for 16 month ds. do you know if this can be taken on a daily basis for preventative measures? I thought I read on the Herbs for Kids website that it can be.....not sure though....I wonder how different the stuff I bought is to a tea form....
anyone with astragalus experience?

I'm no expert on astragalus but, this site has a bunch of awsome info!!
Apothecary Tinctura
Personally, I add a little astragalus to my broths and use it as a tea when sick.
Wanted to add probiotics!!! We buy New Chapter in powder form, drink kefir, kombucha, and eat wild fermented foods Probiotics was one of the things that helped to reduce the possiblity of cytokine storm.

I have given a 10 month old elderberry syrup, it cannot hurt your baby. Also, put some oregano oil on her feet and cover them in socks.
Hope your little one feels better soon!!

I've been wanting to get the New Chapter Probiotics for a while now. Is it the Flora you have? How do you like it?

Yes, it's the All-Flora. I like it, it doesn't taste good by itself but DD doesn't seem to mind it. It's easy to mix and is a trusted brand
