There are a number of things an ultrasound for PIH checks for - placental function and calcification, cord blood flow to the fetus, fetal growth, as growth restriction is a risk of elevated blood pressure, amniotic fluid, and general fetal well-being.

I had monthly u/s scheduled after 20 weeks due to history of severe preeclampsia, and then weekly after a mild pre-e diagnosis until delivery.

www.preeclampsia.org is a great place for information; you should refer your SIL there. GL to her!

Bokonon is smack on. They want to make sure the baby is growing properly and the placenta is doing its job.

Yeah, I am down to weekly u/s to check for growth, fluid amount, and movements. Appearantly PIH or high b/p can cause lots of problems for restricted growth as well as placental problems. And since my b/p has been high and fluctuating since 6wks, they are worried that I will be having problems soon. (Even mentioned that they don't "let" women in my condition go past 37 wks, though they would make an exception in my case, since I outright refuse an induction for "preventative" reasons.

I would consider that a medically indicated ultrasound. I hope your SIL and her LO are doing well.
