Health and Healing - Health and Healing is a forum for discussion that reaches beyond mainstream health care norms. It embraces the wide variety of natural and alternative healing modalities as well as necessary conventional medical care. To further this aim please use the term "health care practitioner" rather than "doctor" to embrace the reality that there are other professionals out there to consult for health care needs.

Shingles! Need help!

Dh has an awful case of the shingles--right on his head and face. He's miserable. What can we do to make him more comfortable?

Have you tried Lysine orally? (The Now brand in tablet form effective. Country Life brand in capsules is not. I would find a good quality one from a health food store as opposed to a drugstore, but the drugstore kind may help in a pinch). 3-5 grams a day helps many people with the pain and itching. cutting out wheat and sugar can help too. Hope he feels better soon!

When I had my shingles the only thing that took the itching away was my son's diaper cream. Avalon Organics brand. Your husband won't be going out of the house so who cares what he has on his face.

Check with your doctor what pain relievers are safe, I assume that the back of his head, in 2 nerve spots are throbbing.

I agree with avoiding sugar. Drink lots of water and rest.

Your husband can thank Merck, the CDC, and the chickenpox vaccine for this.

My dh is immune compromised and had shingles about 10 years ago. We caught it early and were able to start an anti viral medicine that shortened the duration and severity of the episode. It was quite painful though; I am so sorry ...
