Chemical reactions

My 9yo wants to know what other substances can be combined to create the same chemical reaction as (or a similar reaction to) the baking soda/vinegar combination.

Any ideas? Thanks for any input!

Have you tried diet coke and mentos yet? We haven't done it ourselves, but we've seen videos of the reaction and our boys found it quite entertaining.

Oh, yeah, I think diet coke and mentos are what one of my friends used to blow up a balloon with her kids!

We bought a "Fizzy Foamy Science" chemistry kid and in it was Citric Acid. Maybe you could Google that and see what experiments can be done with citric acid.

I like the coke/mentos suggestions....I hadn't heard that.

My boys liked the fizzy foamy science kit too...although most of it is from supplies you already have at home.

The Naked Scientist website has a TON of great experiments...a whole section called kitchen science: http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HT...itchenscience/
We always find something to do from there!

Thanks, you guys!

We sure had fun watching some guys doing wacky experiments with diet coke and mentos on youtube the other day!

On guy ATE the mentos then drank a bunch of diet coke and vomited bigtime, two others bought a TON of diet coke and mentos and kept fountains going for a really long time, and a third pair put the mentos into a 2 liter bottle of coke, then screwed the lid back on really fast and moved away ...

But I don't know if the results (it burst into flames) were genuine or not ...

Now I look forward to checking out the Naked Scientists, LOL.

elephant toothpaste:

You can also show how B. soda and vinegar can inflate a balloon:

make little rockets:

(we have done this with normal film canisters (and even small play doh containers) and it worked)
