Dying with Food Coloring?

I have heard of several people dying with food coloring! I would LOVE to die my prefolds, or a couple to see how it turns out! Ever tried dying prefolds with food coloring?

If so, can you explain how? Did it bleed? Did it turn out more pastel or dark?

It won't work. You'll need "real" dye to do prefolds. Kool-aid only works on animal hair and some synthetics, not cotton

I mean like actual food coloring, not Kool-Aid! I didnt think it would work, well Im sure it would die it, I think it just would be bright enough, it would fade while washed and bleed, Im sure! Is this right?

Wool, silk - basically protein fibers work with kool-aid, food coloring, and jello for dyeing. These are basically all food dyes, so they are essentially the same, and have the same effect on the fabrics.

Cotton really does need something like Procion dyes to work!

I just tried it on a prefold, cuz I figured, hey this stuff stains my clothes when I get it on them so it should dye a prefold. But alas, it only left a little tinge of color. Definitely need real dyes for the cotton stuff.

Food coloring and Kool Aid are the same thing... they are both the same kind of dye.

You could get a tie dye kit at a craft store if you wanted to try it yourself.

We used food coloring to dye some sheets for sail (we made a giant cardbvoard boat fro dd b-day party) it rained and the dye came right out. didn't even have any soap on it.

If you want to dye prefolds, you can get Dylon dyes at WalMart or any craft store. I forgot what the brand names are, though.

You were dying from food coloring? I guess you shouldn't eat it straight from the bottle.

I have dyed wool with food coloring, but I don't think it would work for dyeing prefolds.

They're just called Dylon and they work wonderfully on prefolds!

I guess I should restate that... I think food dyes in food are gross. Food dyes on fabric are cool.

Food dyes are petroleum derived and some ppl have chemical sensitivites to them. Really, there is no reason to make blue applesauce, green yogurt, etc. Kwim?

Nope, food coloring and koolaid are basically the same, only one has flavor. Same with icing dyes. They work on protein fibers (hair, wool, skin, hee hee) But for plant fibers like cotton or hemp, you need fabric dye, i'd recommend Procion fiber reactive dyes from dharma trading or you can even get some cool dying kits at a local fabric store.
