Vaccinations On the issues of vaccinations we believe in informed consent. This means we look at both sides of the vaccine issue. However, one of our objectives, and for which members and guests come to our forum, is to bring to light the information that is not mainstream and readily available. Though Mothering does not take a pro or anti stand on vaccinations, we will not host threads on the merits of mandatory vaccine, or a purely pro vaccination view point as this is not conducive to the learning process.

My 13yo has chicken pox....

What can I do for her both internally and externally? We are the same family that just got over whooping cough, ugh! None of my four children have had chicken pox and have been around her the whole time she was running a fever. What can I start giving them to help their immune systems so if they do catch it they won't get a bad case.

The best thing you can do is avoid all fever reducers. Let her get plenty of rest and fluids. Oatmeal baths or calamine lotion for itching and probably some vit. c can't hurt.

From a Mothering Magazine article on the internet:

http://tinyurl.com/6m75z

"During periods of fever and rash, don't feed your children soda, fruit juice, milk, sugar, or over processed foods, which can hinder their immune systems. Chickenpox taxes defensive organs, such as the liver and kidneys. If your children are not hungry when they have chickenpox, that's normal-don't force food on them. Encourage them to drink plenty of water.

Vitamins A and C can help boost immune response. Oatmeal baths and aloe or calendula creams help sooth itchy lesions. Calamine lotion helps dry them up.

Don't give your children aspirin. Anacin, Bayer, and Excedrin all contain aspirin, as do Pepto-Bismol and Alka-Seltzer. Don't give them acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin). Don't give them steroids, particularly Prednisone. And don't give them antibiotics unless secondary infections appear."

Do you live in California? If so, I'd be interested in a chickenpox party.

We want the CP. Are you anywhere near PA?

Here are some general homeopathic remedies:

Variolinum 30X - During an epidemic before an illness develops take one dose.
Rus Tox - 3-5 times daily for 2 days after contact with an infected child.
Aconite - During the early stages when a child is feverish and anxious but the rash has not appeared.
Belladona - If the child has a high fever, red face and very hot skin.
Rus Tox - Give as soon as the spots appear and continue until they are all gone.
Sulfur - If there is phlegm, alternate this with Rus Tox.

If you have the energy to find which is best for your dc specifically go to:
http://www.abchomeopathy.com/c.php/174

It has very specific symptoms for you to check off.

I also read baths with baking soda work well.

When we thought my ds was exposed to Cp I looked around to see what would help him get through it with minimal discomfort, and recover quickly.
What I found was the recommendation of Zinc, Selenium, Vit A and Vit C.

I also found this

TREATMENT OF CHICKEN POX/MEASLES

To prevent the scars of chickenpox, apply black Abil powder (kaala Abil) over the lesions once the rash has started crusting till the marks fade. Make sure that the child does not scratch a lot over the rashes.|

Put few leaves of neem (limbda) in the room in which the child remains and also upon the doors. They act as an antiseptic and freshen the air. Thus, they prevent superinfection in these patients when their immunity is low due to measles /chickenpox.

Though I have never heard of these!

Good luck, I got CP when I was 12 , I think the worst thing was having to go to school with the pox marks still on my face. I don't remember being too uncomfortable otherwise.

2 common complications are bacterial infection & pneumonia. Tips to prevent bacterial infection midway down this one:

Those who are zinc deficient are much more likely to get pneumonia:
