What's your favorite.......
Allrighty ladies, I've got a serger, a sewing machine and wanna make some diapers! But I don't even know where to start w/ elastic, fabric, patterns, etc. So, tell me your favorite!! I knew I was going to start making my own dipes, so I do have some 2mil PUL in white, MM blue microfleece and some hemp jersey. I've also got a cutting mat and rotary cutter, but my pins are horrible and bend if I put them through a t-shirt! Yuck! I also don't know what the best type of thread to use to make AIO's and fitteds/covers. Is cotton not the best?
Oh and I should say from the start that I prefer side-snapping dipes and wool covers! I do want to make some AIO's for the diaper bag though! And, I will probably be "tweaking" all of the patterns on some lever to incorporate my favorite diaper features!
Fitted Diaper Pattern:
AIO Diaper Pattern:
Diaper Cover Pattern:
Pocket Diaper Pattern (fitted and AIO):
Diaper Sewing Supplies Shop:
Elastic to use in said diapers/covers:
Notions/Thread/snap-press(what size snaps/dies do you use?!):
Fabric:
How-to site:
PF's in to fitteds how-to site:
How do I go about getting in on co-ops for the best type of thread or elastic.? Do they even have such a thing?!
TIA for all your help and input!!

Fitted Diaper Pattern: Darling Diapers
Pocket Diaper Pattern (fitted and AIO): Darling Diapers
Diaper Sewing Supplies Shop: One Stop Diaper Shop (very reliable)
Elastic to use in said diapers/covers: I like 3/8 inch lastin and 3/8 inch knitted
Notions/Thread/snap-press: bendy clips to hold my fabric layers together, Gutermann 100% polyester thread
Fabric: I like sherpa (soaker), double knapped flannel (hidden layer), wovens..flannel prints..knits for outers, 1 mil PUL, cotton velour and microfleece
How do I go about getting in on co-ops for the best type of thread or elastic.? Do they even have such a thing?! The only one I know of is Diaperfabricscoop but I don't know if they do elastic and thread.. I hardly pay attention to it.

Thanks, Jen!
I think I might have to go ahead and get Amber's patterns! I've got one of her pocket fitteds and really love it!

You're very welcome! I absolutely love her patterns (but I loved her diapers too, I think I have bought close to 10 from her and 100 single diapers from many other WAHM's! lol).
I also plan to start ordering PUL from JanellesPULs.com She sprays her PUL with waterproofing spray before sending it to you and that will save me time and money.

Jesse, I'm still completely jealous of your serger!! But I'm trying to do what I can without one and Just Yesterday (hooray!) I got my VB AIO pattern, some PUL, birdseye, and hemp jersey (along with elastic and aplix because I don't have a snap press -- yet).
I'm so excited to get started on it all, but completely spaced out getting 100% poly thread So now I have to get some before really getting started.
I ordered everything from http://www.onestopdiapershop.com . Did I mention the PUL I Got was bright orange, neon green, black and white?!? Oh man it looks awesome together. I'm completely loving bold colors (I got the white for the nice, simple look of dipes and also to make some for dh's cousin and his wife -- due next month!).
But.. I don't have a lot of advice yet. I haven't started sewing them yet -- just collecting bits and pieces to get started on things. And maybe I can convince dh's aunt that I need to use her serger

Fitted Diaper Pattern: pocket fitted from darling diapers
AIO Diaper Pattern: pocket fitted from darling diapers (modified)
Diaper Cover Pattern: still working on this one
Pocket Diaper Pattern (fitted and AIO): guess!
Diaper Sewing Supplies Shop: there are several that i've ordered from and had good experiences with -- diapershop.com is good and i like sewshoppe.com too. then there's http://www.acutabovefabrics.com , which looks like it has a nice fabric selection, but i haven't tried it yet.
Elastic to use in said diapers/covers: i like 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch swimsuit elastic from joann's
Notions/Thread/snap-press(what size snaps/dies do you use?!): gutterman poly -- if your making aios definately use poly
Fabric: hemp french terry is my very favorite, but i also love hemp fleece, sherpa, cotton velour (especially organic, yum!)
How-to site: Here's a bunch of links.
PF's in to fitteds how-to site:
How do I go about getting in on co-ops for the best type of thread or elastic.? Do they even have such a thing?! search yahoo groups for "diaper fabric" and "fabric coops", "cloth diaper coop", etc. i mostly get hemp and other fabrics from coops and thread and elastic at joann's, though.

I'm still in shock about the serger! I just look at it and grin and then do a happy dance! It's such an unbelievable machine that I got for such a great price!!
I can't wait to see what you make w/ your stuff! I really want snaps, so I think I'll make everything up and then send it off to be snapped rather than using aplix. I'm glad to know about the type of elastic, though!
Thanks for all of the great advice!

Oh, and I've just determined that you can't live without a rotary cutter (48 mm Olfa) and mat (any old brand will do)! It saves a world of time!

Yeah, a rotary cutter is AWESOME. You can get a small Olfa one at Hancock's for about $10 and a mat at Walmart for about $10. You can lay all of your layers on top of each other to cut out your pattern which makes all the layers uniform.
Fitted Diaper pattern: Goodness Gracious is a good one to start with until you make your own. It can easily be used as a pocket pattern and comes in 3 sizes.
AIO: There's a pattern online to sew a Fuzzi Bunz type diaper (for home use only)
Cover: once you sew a diaper you can defintely wing a cover!
Sewing supplies: wher do I begin? I search endlessly online and there are so many places to get great stuff.
pumkinbutt
sewshoppe
diaperfabric
diapershop
fabric.com
malden mills retail store
a cut above fabrics -great to get a little bit of everything to try
I use mostly elastin, 3/8 braided in my pockets
Maxilock and Wooly Nylon (wears really well)
I have a snap press from onestop and use 20 inch dies. Now, snap store sells presses but the snap are not compatible. You will have to buy additional die sets for snapstore snaps. Snapstore does offer a mixed color assortment wher onestop does not.
GET A ERASABLE MARKING PEN!
Fabric, I'm addicted!!!! The above are good sites to start with, but there is a world of fabric out there!!!!!
I love organics these days. nearseanaturals.com is a great source
I don't do co-ops. I'm a fabric hyena!!!!!!

I haven't tried enough patterns to really have favorites of most of those but I do really like the VB AIO pattern. Its just so fun to make other people's patterns. I like them all. I really want to try the darling diaper pattern but I'm trying to not spend more $ now.
Diaper Sewing Supplies Shop: I've had good experiences with diaperfabric.com, OSDS, the fabric farm and sewzannes. Sewzannes is a super fast shipper-maybe just because she is so close to me though. Her packages arrive before the shipping notification, :LOL!
Elastic to use in said diapers/covers:
Usually 3/8" lastin, polybraid is fine with me too though for personal projects.
Notions/Thread/snap-press(what size snaps/dies do you use?!):
size 20 snaps. I used to have the size 16 industrial snaps but they did not work for me at all. Well, they worked but I felt like they were too small and didn't always go through thicker layers like heavy weight fleece covers. I had a harder time fastening them too because they were smaller. I have a press from OSDS and now I get my snaps from www.thesnapstore.com (had to buy new dies of course) I also used to have the hammer on metal snaps from snapsource. Bleah. Hooray for snap presses!
As for thread I really like wooly nylon now. So durable and a neat tight edge. I just like the look, texture and colors of wooly nylon lately. Jeanstitch is such a pretty textured thread too, but very different than wn.
Fabric:
My personal favorite fabric is organic french terry now. Trim, absorbent, organic, simple. Actually I am tempted by organic birdseye now too after making a VB AIO last night-I feel the birdseye love!
How-to site:
I love the F&F site-so inspiring with the frugal diapering
www.sewdiapers.com
www.diapersewing.com
PF's in to fitteds how-to site:
only one I've seen is diapersewing. I'm sure there is more.
How do I go about getting in on co-ops for the best type of thread or elastic.? Do they even have such a thing?!
YES!!!!! This will save you SOOOOOO much $$$! go to yahoo and join:
the fabric farm and sewing supply co-op. They are really high traffic so be sure to get just important announcements or you will have a full inbox in no time. These are my favorite co-ops now. the fabric farm is running one for organic birdseye if there is enough interest. wool jersey at $4 and 5/yd-you can't beat it. sewing supply is more notions but she also co-ops pul and things sometimes. there may be some left overs from the last rounds of wool at the fabric farm co-op as sometimes there are extras.
its not the fastest way to get stuff but if you can plan ahead and have a little time you will save big time
TIA for all your help and input!![/QUOTE]

This is a very useful thread so I thought I'd resurrect it.
