Scientology advises NOT to breastfeed???

I just heard that Scientologists are not supposed to breastfeed - that feeding them a "formula" of barley water, milk and Karo syrup is better???

Mommaduck, I just did the same thing...WHOA! The first two links are so similiar and just frightening. This stuff reminds me of Ezzo. (In the second link it said something about babies having sleep problems or being cross until this guy "straightened them out")

If I recall correctly - breastfeeding is demanding for mothers and can be very tiring, especially if she has a poor diet.

Well, yes, it can be tiring (especially if one is on a poor diet), but it's so much better STILL for mother and babe. Being a mother is about sacrifice of ourselves, our time, our energies. It's a beautiful thing. Better than the "I'm tired, I'll 'fix' it by removing access to my milk from the baby" (Goodness, this "the poor people" can't do it business is what the formula companies strive for!)

Unfortunately, some Christians aren't very supportive of breastfeeding either... but I hope to see that change (and I'm getting ready to stick a Jesus was breastfed! window cling on my van :LOL).

LOL! That is a good one! Wether people believe in Jesus or not they could maybe get the point that at one time every baby was! Theoretically anyhow.

On the other hand, just FYI, some Christians, particularly Catholics, are VERY supportive of bfing. In fact, not to hijack this into a too-religious thread, but I think it's important to note the contrast to Scientology, etc. - many popes and other Catholic authorities have made strong statements that Catholic mothers are supposed to bf, because it's the way God designed it and it's an obligation to be self-sacrificing for your baby and of course because it's healthier. There's a book that just came out:

called "Breastfeeding and Catholic Motherhood" that talks about how bfing is essential, in fact it goes as far as to say that deliberately NOT bfing could be considered a sin in Catholic theology because it goes against God's plan! You'd think it would be obvious that bfing is God's - or nature's, whatever you believe - plan, wouldn't you???

Anyway, hope that's not too OT but being Catholic I think it's neat that the Church is so pro-bfing, that could influence a lot of Christian moms (I hope!)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but in addition to the being "too tiring" for the mother aspect of it, aren't Scientologists told not to breastfeed because they ingest too many toxins? I am pretty sure I read that on a Scientology website.

Of course, that's easily fixed by living in a better environment, eating whole organic foods, and abstaining from caffeine and alcohol (not that I do that a lot of the time : ) if they're so worried about it.

15 ounces of barley water
10 ounces of homogenized milk
3 ounces of corn syrup (As the Romans had honey, 2 ounces of honey may be used instead of corn syrup, if desired. Do not use lactose [a sugar found in milk, used in infant foods] as a substitute.) The amount of syrup should be varied - depending on the baby - some like it weak - some take it stronger.

Interesting - here Tom Cruise is spouting about the need for exercise and supplements to cure depression because thats what his religion believes, which is a pretty "natural" way of approching PPD - and yet, that same religion encourages moms to do something VERY artificial and in no way "natural" to nurture and feed their babies??!?!

Holy crap to giving honey to babies, and that bunk about "musty" milk and how poor a food source breastmilk is. How about some religious rules about eating well and avoiding ingestion of toxins?

Um, PARENTING is demanding for mothers and can be tiring! I would recommend that people who don't want to be tired avoid becoming parents.

Usually the tiredness associated with breastfeeding is a sleepiness caused by the hormones released when you nurse your babe. Those hormones are nature's way of getting you to slow down and take care of yourself and your child.

Grrrr. Argh.
