Lactivism Lactivism is positive breastfeeding activism! Appropriate posts for this forum would include reporting of incidents, calls to action, current breastfeeding studies, and breastfeeding news stories. This is not a place to criticize mothers who, for whatever reason, choose to formula feed. General vents and observations will be moved to the appropriate forum.

Lactivist Alert, Walmart/Similac Nutrition seminars

http://walmart.triaddigital.com/enha...ktid10784.aspx

Walmart is hosting a "Nutrition & Feeding Educational Seminar" sponsored by Similac on Feb 3, 2007. Follow the above link and input your zip code for the closest nearby location. Some ideas I have include bringing pamphlets, wearing "Got Breastmilk" or similar t-shirt, showing up with a shopping cart full of nursing bras and breastpumps, and of course, nursing my 3 year old in his sling.

If this post is improper, please delete, thanks!

Gross! I cannot believe that PDF all about babyfeeding without even the token "breast is best" line.

Go mamas!

For those of thinking about handing out pamphlets or info sheets, what exactly are you going to use? Just curious in case I actually get inspired to do a little lactivism at my local Wal-Mart. I don't know if they have some type of store policy about distributing literature. Are you planning on asking for permission or are you just going to risk being asked to stop or leave?

I'm thinking I'm going to go and just keep asking about breastfeeding. "What about breastfeeding?" "Doesn't the AAP and WHO say that mothers should breastfeed?" "Doesn't the AAP and WHO say that mothers should breastfeed EXCLUSIVLY with no formula at all for at LEAST 6 months?" "Doesn't formula put baby at risk for ear infections, respitory infections, obesity, diabetis, and SIDS?" LOL

I might do that as well, I'd use ProMom or Dr. Newman stuff.

I would think materials that demonstrate how much money the formula corporations are making off babies would be the best bet. That's what the most successful anti-tobacco campaigns have done -- show how tobacco companies are lying to and profiting from smokers. NOT attack smokers / formula feeders.

I think this would be a great hand out, printed in color and double-sided. I'm sure it's in the public domain as long as you don't alter it kind of thing. I wonder how expensive it would be? I like it because it clearly says formula is inferior, without attacking FFers.

The nearest ones to me are out of state, in NH...I wonder if the WalMarts here have chosen not to participate because of the controversy over the MA formula gift-bag ban being revoked? I guess I could dream about that being the reason. I mean, there's a WalMart a few miles from me.

oohhh.. I like this approach!

I was thinking of creating a handout - not affiliated with any one organization - listing how much $ a family saves by breastfeeding, how much $ formula companies make, etc...(plus obvious benefits, etc...)

Possibly I might go. My DH comes back from deployment right around then and honestly I'd rather spend my time with him but if he has duty that day then I am free

Thanks for the heads up. I just contacted our local stores and am setting up promo stuff there for my doula biz. We'll spread the word about NFL out there amidst the formula propaganda. I'll try to get some flyers from the LLL to put out on our table.

The one on FM 78, right? I'll try to be there. Maybe I'll bring along some printouts on the AAP statement on breastfeeding. Any clue how we get those "thank you for breastfeeding" cards from the Department of Health? Anyone?
