Hemp Seeds?

I just bought a package of hemp seeds for the first time. I was planning on using them to make 'hefu,' a hemp based tofu (someone posted the recipe here awhile ago.) But they surprised me being so tasty plain, and they cost $7.99 for a little bag, so I'm afraid to use up the whole thing with this recipe.

Does anyone have a less expensive source for hemp seeds? Or are they always a bit pricey? Also, do hemp seeds need to be shelled in order to eat them (or use them for hefu?)

hi there,
I'd think they'd need to be shelled. I don't know that I've seen them for sale with shells. As for getting them cheaper, there are always Frontier co-ops on the TP, maybe they sell them?

Do you still have the hemp tofu recipe? That sounds good and I'm not good at using the search feature here!

Here's the recipe:

5 dl (deciliters, I assume. i.e. the same as 1/2 a liter.)
1.5 liters water

Blend in blender until it forms a smooth mass. Strain to separate milk from seedmass.

Warm hempmilk in a double boiler (a bowl inside of a pot with water in it) until hefu mass starts to separate from whey. Don't boil it in a pot by itself.

Line the strainer with gauze and pour hefu milk through it. Close the gauze tightly and put a pressure on it for at least 30 minutes. For firmer hefu, apply pressure for longer. When hefu is firmed, it's ready to use.

Don't throw seedmass and whey away. Use them for bread, porridge, "meatballs" or whatever.

hmm. That sounds interesting. Have you tried it? What does it taste like? I wonder if you could use already made hemp milk?

I haven't tried it yet. I'm going to try for a slightly less pricey bag of hemp seeds first, just in case it doesn't work. I don't know if you can use premade hempmilk. I've often wondered that about tofu and premade soymilk too....

The post where it originally appeared said that the recipe came from a place called Lassila farm.

if you google hemp seeds you can find them for about $12per pound. Or amazon has 5 pounds for $47 and free shipping

You don't need to get shelled - just soak them overnight before you make the hemp mylk, and then proceed with your recipe.

I haven't yet managed to get hemp to coagulate enough though But did have success with Quinoa

I love hemp seeds, I have a whole book of hemp seed recipes even. I always buy the shelled kind too though and they are awfully expensive.

Dreena Burton (Vive Le Vegan and Eat, Live, and Eat, Drink and Be Vegan) uses hemp seeds a lot. I hadn't heard of them until I started cooking from her cookbooks. I don't remember them being that expensive at my coop, however. But I bought them in bulk...and it only filled up half of one of my storage jars. It's so good for you! I like to sprinkle them on my salads...

Yep, I posted the recipe some time ago. Lassila farm is a Finnish farm which produces organic goods, like hemp seeds.

I also have recipe for hemp seed butter that I'm going to try... I have a bag of seeds waiting.
