I have no income, no college degree, and am very financially dependent on my spouse. We have three children, ages nine, six, and four and we homeschool them. We are financially secure because he has a stable career and is well-educated. It is possible that our marriage may be coming to an end and I don't want to lose the opportunity to homeschool my kids because of that. I am not prepared to begin working full-time to make ends meet. Is it possible for a single mother to homeschool?
Yes, it is possible for you to be a single mother and homeschool. My suggestions to you are as follows:
1. Get an agreement with your spouse that you both will continue to homeschool your children. Include in the agreement what each of you will do to support a homeschool education. Work together to develop the curriculum, etc. and be supportive of your spouse participating as much as he can.
2. As long as you are not concerned about how your spouse will parent the children, be liberal but structured with parenting time and demonstrate your desire for you both to have a close and positive relationship with the children.
If your spouse suggests that he might not agree to have you both continue to homeschool try to find out what his concerns are and work with him to develop reasonable solutions that you can both live with.
Remember that in a divorce, finances will change supporting two households so you might want to prepare yourself to get at least a part-time job to help -- perhaps you could tutor other children as part of your homeschooling of your children, for example.
If all else fails, and he is amicable, try to work with a mediator to work out the terms of the divorce and the homeschooling.
Worse case scenario, and attorneys get involved, you can contact local homeschool groups, if you are not already affiliated with one, in your area and locate an attorney who is used to handing these kinds of cases. There is an education expert in Oregon, Dr. Brian Ray who you can also consult with if needed.
I hope you find this informaiton helpful.
Best of luck!
