Okay, I know it isn't strictly plant related.  :)  But I'm trying to decide what to do with the yard, we're definitely doing a children's garden.  I saw this picture:  I thought it would be perfect for the bank we have at the back of our yard (when they dug the swimming pool, they just dumped all the dirt back there.. now it's covered with weeds).  But I can't seem to find any info on how to do it properly.  Any thoughts?

Looks like mortared river rocks. Lovely, but no good in my climate because the ground heaves here which will crack mortar/concrete. The key with most types of retaining walls is ensuring good drainage under the wall to help prevent shifting and minimize the effects of ground heaving. This usually means a layer of sand or gravel under the wall below the first level of pavers/stones. Helps leveling too. Have you tried the library for a good how to book?

I saw this on Natural Playgrounds. Its such a cool idea. A climbing wall as a retaining wall is great. As far as how you would do it goes, Ill have to get back to you. Ill ask my DH. He owns a landscaping company and should be able to tell me the general idea.
