Sooooo...this is my first year with an herb garden. I have: English lavender, purple sage, white sage, golden oregano, regular oregano, thyme, parsley, calendula and two kinds of basil. What should I do to winter these plants over? Should I start new ones from cuttings (and how do I do that??) Should I dig up whole plants and bring them inside? Help, please!!

It looks like your post might have been missed, so I wanted to bump it up for attention. :bump: Anyone have suggestions to share? I've never winterized herbs myself, but I'd be interested in trying as well.

Hey, thanks! I did have to cut some of the herbs down the other day before a freeze and I'm drying but I haven't dug everything up yet and I'm hoping not to!

I am in Eastern Ontario.  I can get to Vermont in about 4 hours - so we have similar climates, although you are a bit more mountainy.

 

I leave the oregano in the garden.  I do heap leaves on it once they fall, as a bit of mulch.  It does just fine and is one of the best herbs in my garden.

 

Parsely and thyme will also overwinter, although they do not seem quite as hardy as oregano.  My parsley lasts 2 or 3 years, then I need to plant a new one.  Ditto thyme.

 

Basil does not last over the winter, and my attempt at growing it inside have failed - although my thumb is more khaki than green. 

 

If a frost is coming (and I heard "overnight low of 3 degrees  on the radio a few hours ago yikes2.gif - which is about 35 or 36 farenheit) - harvest what you can.  Things like basil will instantly turn black and unusable if there is a hard frost - so sad!!!  I am drying some basil and freezing some in ice cubes for fall/winter use.  

 

I don't know if you do garlic - but now is a good time to get them in the garden for next season.

Book and herb loving mama to 1 preteen and 2 teens (when did that happen?).  We travel, go to school, homeschool, live rurally, eat our veggies, spend too much time...
