Help, my thumbs aren't green yet!

I want to grow my own red raspberry plants... Can I start them in pots on an apt. patio? If so, when do they need to be transferred to their own plot of land? I really need "Red Raspberry Care for Dummies".

Any advice, pointers, and/or websites will be much appreciated!

I'm not too experienced either, but what I do know is that rasberry canes send out lot's of suckers and tend to spread. Also, If you have little kids playing on the patio, The canes are rather brutal, lots of thorns. That's pretty much all.

How odd -- I'm eating just-picked red raspberries as I drift to your thread. Early this year. The secret to them is land. Preferably someone else's. They are nasty and thorny and spread like crazy. I'd opt for along a fence rather than the patio because they're tough enough to survive, spread and sort of climb. You don't want to handle them for transplant. Farther away from people is best (got woods? hedge border?); they bite!

momtoo - can you share some pruning tips?! We have three rows of out-of-control bushes in our garden. Is it ok to cut down the canes that are in the way - or will it hinder next year's berry production?

wish I knew. I'd call the county extension folks. I can tell you that we enjoy gobs of berries from along an access road that gets "cleared" twice a year by the power line people. They chop them back pretty brutally, and there's never a shortage. Good luck!
