We rent in NY... and our backyard is a cement wasteland. I'd love to transform it some... but I'm limited to container gardening. Anybody have any ideas/tips for stuff I could do now? Money is an issue... and I'm not that experienced with keeping green stuff alive.

Your biggest issue is that is about to be winter. You could get some inexpensive pots of mums for now. They are on sale for fall right now, usually you can find good sized pots, three for 10 or 12 dollars. Set the plants still in their ugly plastic pots into pretty containers/planters and place them about the yard. You can also place pumpkins and other winter squash around the yard with the mums, and if the squirrels don't get them first, then you can eat them for dinner in the next month or so.

For now, you could concentrate on the garden hardscape, in other words, the furniture and ornaments. I love recycled garden art for that purpose, look around your house with a new eye for items that you may never have considered putting outside. Also, if you had the money to invest in maybe one large potted evergreen, that would give you something to look at and admire this winter.

Good Luck! I think others will have some good ideas for you!

Thanks Shaywyn... great ideas. I'll be on the look-out for Mums. I love them... and they come in such nice autumnal colors.

Wow! You're only 1 post away from 1000 and Senior Member status.

Congrats!
