This is our second year growing broccoli, and I'm disappointed in it. It seems to take up quite a bit of garden space only to produce a tiny amount of edible top - am I doing something wrong or is this normal for broccoli? I guess I'm thinking in the samr space I could get a hundred times more yield if I planted kale or spinach instead.
Yeah, brocolli uses up a lot of space and takes a lot longer to grow than other things. Guess it all depends on how much you like it as to whether you would be happy enough going for something else instead?
Yup they do take up a big space for not much food. If your soil is very fertile and you water just right (enough but not too much) you can get bigger heads but it's still not much. After you pick the first head, the plant will keep producing smaller side shoot heads until frost. So that does up their food value a bit.
