okay, I know I haven't been around for a while, but I just had to share...
long story short:
DH & I were drinking out in the back yard one night, getting sloshed, and no lie, a slug the length of a brick slimed out under the seat...I had to slaughter it, it was fat with baby slugs on it's back. Well, a few days later, I was running the trash out and stepped on one. It was the grossest thing ever and took 2 whole days to scrub off my foot. Yuck! uke: So ever since then I have been on slug patrol at night. Friend & I found one just a few days ago, and I again had to slaughter it. Poor slimy little bastards. Why are they invading my yard? There aren't even any plants worth eating back there!
Have you sent the kids out at dusk with salt shakers? I'm so completely evil - I'd rather salt the darn things and watch them shrivel than attack with a hoe. At least so far. I fondly remember slug-hunting with Grandpa in my younger years.... Those were the days...
That is one monster slug. Blech. I stepped on one last summer and you are right, it takes forever to get the gross slime off your skin. I got it between my toes... ewwwwwww!
TG our slugs are not that big. They're about 1/2".
We haven't had too many this year, it was too hot. then we had some cooler weather & rain so they came out. Most of my plants that I run into them with are done though. Plus with the ants I've been battling in my house the slugs aren't as much of an annoyance this year provided they stay outside.
I love salting them though. It is poetic justice to watch them melt.
We have a friend that gets them that big, blech!!!! When I find them I'll pick them up, wearing gloves, and toss them is soapy water. Mmmmmmm slug stew
Well, the beer from what I hear only really works for the littler ones. That guy coulda slimed right out. That was a vinegar/water mixture to kill that bad mama!
Oh my goodness, just the other day I went to pick some mint out of a container and curled up in there was a monster slug. At first glance, I thought it was a snake. that's just how big it was. My garden beds seem to attract them and I'm not sure why. Ugh, ugh, ugh!!
Here in Germany the slugs are gigantic, but they're bright rust red!! One ate an eight inch pumpkin plant in one night. The WHOLE plant!
I understand your dislike of the nasty little things...but my kids LOVE 'em.
