Does using hot water for washing clothes set stains, or is it just the heat from the dryer that sets stains?

What is the best temperature for getting out stains?

And soaking ahould be done in cold water, correct? Should you still soak in cold water if you are using oxygen bleach, or soap in the water you are soaking in? If so, does that mean you should mix the oxygen bleach in hot water, per the instructions, and wait for it to cool before adding the clothing

Does drying clothes in the dryer on low versus drying in the dryer on hot make any difference in setting stains?

Does anyone know?

Also, what do YOU use to treat stains before wash day?

Can you reccmmend any good sites/ books/ resources on doing laundry?

Heat will set stains. I think it has something to do with tightening the fibers of the cloth or maybe just baking it in.

I do a cold soak with baking soda with both my white and diaper loads. Then a hot wash with a smidge of detergent and 2 scoops of oxyclean for the whites (no oxy for diapers) and cold wash with an extra cold wash for the dipes. I don't have a problem with stains with this routine.

Sunlight will help with alot of stains. I hang them wet in the sun or just lay on a towel in a sunny window.

Good luck,

I soak in cold immediately. The key to getting out stains is not to let the item sit untreated.

I using Oxyclean (which I do when other cold soaks, SHOUT, doesnt work) I use hot as per directions. I have yet to NOT get a stain out with Oxyclean.

THe heat from the dryer will absolutely set the stain.......

Not for me. Love washing in hot water.

Edited to add that I yard sale and will buy stained clothes that appear to be set, have always been able to get them out.

My favorite stain removers are Tide, Oxygen Bleach, Calgon.
