Just curious if there is a natural, home-made (and CHEAP) remedy for curing vaginal yeast infections. A box of Canestin or Monistat costs me around $18.00 and I would love to eliminate this cost from our tight budget.

p.s. I eat plain yogurt daily as a preventative measure but still am curious if there is substitute I can use for the actual cream.

You might try using a clove of garlic, I know that sounds crazy but it is really supposed to be effective, AND cheap! You're supposed to insert it at bed time and take it out when you wake up. Tea tree oil suppositories are another option, tho more expensive. I've used them when I felt one coming on and prevented it altogether. HTH! Be well!

Tea tree oil suppositories are only $11 for a box of 6. They work really well for me. You can also mix some tea tree oil plain (about $18 for a bottle that goes a LONG way) with some water and put it on a tampon.

I did a search on this here just yeterday and got some good advice that REALLy worked.

The suggestion I saw was to use plain yogurt as a suppository. I took a medical exam glove and filled three of the fingers with yogurt and then stuck the whole thing in the fridge. Last night before going to bed I inserted one "finger" and put on a cloth pad. This morning I woke up to NO symptoms and LESS mess than I usually had with the OTC creams.

By the way, my husband thought the whole thing was hilarious.

Good luck!

The yogurt suppository method is

You can also just smear a tsp or two of yogurt all up in that (my yeast seems to be more on the outside than the inside, but I get some inside, too). That's more messy, but less prep time involved!

BTW, I've heard if you use garlic, you should wrap the clove in a piece of thin cotton cloth. Otherwise it may be too irritating... also, someone suggesting coating it with olive oil, too. Don't leave it in more than overnight, I'd say...

the garlic works great! it just gets a little creepy when in 15 min. or so you have garlic breath!
it can also help to thread a piece of dental floss through it to assist in the removal-unless you have a close friend who won't mind fishing it out for you-the garlic can 'go wayward' in there! oh yeah-don't use mint floss-unless you don't mind a 'thread of cool minty feel' in your yoni!:LOL
i've recently heard about using a '00' gel cap filled with boric acid powder as a safe suppository treatment too.

Dr Andrew Weil has a recipe on his site for treating yeast infections with TTO. You might want to check it out.
