We have been wanting to rip out our carpet in our livingroom and put down wood floors for YEARS now. Well, we were all set to order the wood, but now I am getting paranoid about the finish. We live in a condo (concrete subfloor) , so that means we have to go with a glue-down or floating (snap-into place) installation. We decided we want to do floating, so that we can eliminate the toxic glue fumes. HOWEVER, all the floating floor seem to come pre-finished...with "Urethane w/ Alum Oxide" -- how bad do you think that would be for our family? Anyone have any ideas for other options--that would work over a concrete subfloor?

Are you planning on installing the floors yourself or are you going to hire a flooring company to do it for you? Have you considered using a material like bamboo? I have heard that they are supposed to be more friendly and I think you can get them in a floating system. We have turned our garage into a room, and when we talk to a "handy man" about our concrete floor, he said that we should install a subfloor before installing a flooring material. Since I kind of like the concrete... we have not been in a rush to change it.
These are a couple of flooring company's that were listed in the back of Natural Home Magazine. Both claim to be environmentally friendly and the first specifically stated non-toxic. Maybe you could contact them and ask about the finishes and how to lay their products on a concrete floor.

I second Melissa's suggestions. We rent a house with all wood floors but when we finish some of the floors in our home that we own, we'll be using bamboo.
