Hello,

I purchased a cast iron pan from a yard sale (very inexpensively). It is slightly rusty. I am planning to scour the rust with barkeepers friend. All instructions I have read for seasoning these pans says that you should do so in the oven. I don't think I should put the wooden handles in the oven. Is there a way to do this on the stove top? Will it work as well, or is this pan useless??

Thanks in advance,
Jane

My cast iron pan has a wooden handle......but it unscrews. Look at yours, maybe its the same.

BUT, Ive always seasoned mine on the stove top anyway. With whatever oil I have on hand.....

You can also cover the handle with aluminum foil if you wanted to do it in the oven.

I've had good luck seasoning cast iron on stove-top...

Once you get most of the rust taken care of, rub the inside of the pan with a good amount of vegetable oil and let the pan sit on a very low flame until it seems dry...

Good luck!

Thanks! I will try it on the stove. I don't think the handles will unscrew.
