first dump in some baking soda, then add vinegar. It will make your 4th grade science fair volcano and clear your drain. It will clear out any smells too!
Hydrogen peroxide works great too. You can get it in the pharmacy section, and maybe in the laundry section as a 'natural' bleach. Get the stongest kind. It can irritate skin, and will bleach fabric if it is in contact for a long time, but basically it's just oxygen.
After you dump the BS and the V down, flush with the hottest water possible for 5 full minutes, a lot of built up gunk will melt away.
Not very water-thrifty, but it really works to prevent further problems
Every couple weeks or so I try to remember to dump a tea kettle full of hot water down every drain in the house -- it seems to help prevent problems from building up.
