This may get a little gross so remember, I warned you.

My family, starting with BIL, moving to his kids, to our kid, to us, blah, blah, all recently suffered The Great Illness. I guess it was a sort of long-lived flu. I've found "Black Plague" to be more accurate, even though there's nothing especially black about it.

By the end of it, my daughter and husband both had ear infections (bacterial--treated successfully with antibiotics--sorry if that's a no-no on this forum, but I only bring it up to point out that my question is about a non-bacterial problem) and Dh and I both had pink eye (again, successfully treated with topical antibiotics).

For the most part, we are all healed up, with a bit of lingering cough here and there and a sensation of not being quite back to 100%. But my ear (left, if that matters to you) feels terribly stuffed up. It sounds and feels like I've filled it with cotton; when I swallow there's a crinkle like cellophane. I went back to the doc to make sure I hadn't had bacteria migrate from my eyes, but I'm still not showing any actual *ear* problem. What he sees is that the sinuses are not draining--which causes the ear to feel blocked. I'm on prescription decongestant and antiinflamatory in the hopes that the inflamation will go down enough for the goo to drain out.

My nose is no longer running and I'm not coughing up anything to speak of. The phlegm aint moving. I feel an urge to put something in my ear--TTO, a sliver of garlic, boiling water, a knitting needle, ANYTHING! (Note: I'm resisting this urge.) Does anyone have any home remedies that might help? Please? There isn't any wax buildup--q-tips do nothing and the doc saw nothing of that sort. Saline up the nose, steam, and hot foods don't seem to help as the congestion is no longer in the nose or throat anymore, just the sinuses around the ear apparently. I'm going crazy with this.

Hi- I have only posted on the diapering forum and decided to wander around a bit and see what else there is around here...
Anyway, I have two words for you- neti pot. If you have a Wild Oats around you I know they carry them. You can also find them online. We have horrible sinus problems in our family and the neti pot is something I highly recommend HTH!

I know you think there is nothing in your ear but there may be. I had this type of cold about a year ago when Layla was born. I went for about 3 weeks without being able to hear. I tried the ear candles, didn't work. Then I got ear wax removal drops, not exactly natural, it is some kind of perioxide I think. But after 4 days of using it 3 times a day and flushing like they say with warm water, I actually had something come out of my ear that was just plain scary. And then I was healed, I could hear, though of course after so many weeks of not being able to hear, it was deafening. And then my sinuses drained. So what I am saying is it is wortg a shot, the drops are usually found by like the contact solution and such in a pharmacy area of a store.
