I've got a black wool pea coat that needs a good wash. Of course, it has a label which says "dry clean only". This coat was pretty pricey back when I bought it, and I love it so much I'd hate to ruin it. And I don't have the funds to go out and get a new one if I did ruin it.

I was thinking of filling the bathtub with some body temp water and a little liquid biokleen, and squeezing the soapy water through it. Then, rolling it in towels to get the water out, and hanging to dry.

So..........would you do that if you were me? Or would you dry clean it and not assume the risk? TIA!

I had the exact same issue this year! I seldom dry clean anything (I think maybe I have 2-3 times) and hand washing and hanging dry usually does work for me, despite what the label says. But I did hand wash my beloved brown wool pea coat that I have had for 2 years, and now it just will never be the same. It still fits, but not very well (it did shrink), but most of all it doesn't breathe the same--I can't stand to wear it. The underarm area is now too snug (that is where the shrinkage mostly happened--there and across the back), and the wool is now too dense to be comfortable.

If I were you, I take it to a dry cleaner you trust and just spend the money to have it done professionally. It will probably come out looking good as new, and most of all it will still be wearable.

Take care,
Lisa
