I have good quality steak knives that are only suppossed to be hand washed but somehow someone in my family ran it thru the dishwasher. I went to the website of the manufactuer and it said that dishwashing may cause corrosion of the handle due to the heat and detergent - which indeed seems to be what has happened because it's lighter now. Should I throw away the knife or is it still safe to use?? I'm bummed. I love these knives

Hard to say--is it just lightening of the handle, or does there appear to be pitting?

Is the handle made of wood?

not made of wood. Some black and metal material

The dishwasher probably just washed off the seasoning off the handle.

Same thing happens to my pot handles.

No reason IMO to throw out a perfectly good knife.
