So I tried no poo. Used 1 teaspoon bs with 1 cup water and poured it over my head and then scrubbed my scalp. Rinsed. Then I used 1 tablespoon of acv to 1 cup water and poured it over my head. I rubbed it in, scrubbed it in, and rinsed it out.

My hair de-tangled great, but as it is drying, it feels funny - like when you've been swimming in a chlorine pool and had it dry in your hair. It really feels kind of gross.

Tomorrow is our anniversary, and I'm thinking I should have waited to start this experiment until after the first of the year.

What did I do wrong? I have medium length hair - but VERY thick and course. Did I not use enough bs or acv?

Well, I've never no-poo'd before, but I've read that it takes time for your hair to adjust. It'll probably feel weird for a week or two, then calm down a bit and settle into its own balanced ratio of natural oil and whatnot.

I think the "chlorine" feeling is probably because it's been stripped of shampoo/conditioner residue. Much like chlorine strips your hair after you've been swimming.

I'd return to your shampoo routine until after your anniversary if you want your hair to look nice. Then try no-poo'ing when you don't need to look fancy for awhile.

Good luck!

My adjustment period was about 2 weeks (and prior to that, I was only shampooing about once a week or so).

Does your hair feel dirty or too dry?

if your hairs seems dirty up the BS

if it seems too dry um the ACV- and maybe use a little conditioner too?

your hair will need an adjustment period and also you need to find what proportions work for your hair- check out www.naturallycurly.com too for tips for curly hair- they recommend a different routine for curly and coarse hair, I think

Good luck and don't give up yet!!

For me it's best to just pour the acv over the bottom half of my hair. I never pour on my scalp or scrub it in. I have very thick hair, but not really coarse. I only use no-poo a few days a week...still trying to get into the every day or every other day thing!

I use way less bs to a cup of water. I've found that even a little bit too much makes my hair dry/brittle feeling. And I have to rinse it off right away.
The amount of acv that I use matters way less, and I can leave the acv on a little bit.

If it were me, I'd go the next few days with just water washings, then start with less bs and see how that works.

I tried No-poo a few months ago and gave up very quickly, because it didn't seem to be working.
This time I've been at it for at least three weeks, and I can see my hair getting better every day. It STILL "feels" weird/different as it dries (for me personally), but if you stick it out for a while, I have a feeling it'll get better good luck!

What worked for me was rinsing with ACV and water for a few days between BS. It could be BS residue from what you are saying, and I think I had the same thing. I kept thinking it was dirty, so I would wash with BS again, and it still felt sticky (even stickier). Doing just ACV for a few days seems to work for me.

I have super thick hair little past my shoulders. I use about 1 Tablespoon of BS with less than 1 cup of water. It's not drying at all - I've used natural shampoos that were way more drying. I also add about 1/2 tsp of conditioner - it seems to have a synergy effect and cleans better. Oh, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to cut down on alkalinity.

I used to use diluted lemon juice rinse but stopped because I just craved conditioner! That and my hair was staticky.

I wrote a blog about my no-poo experience. Kind of long, but hope it helps!

Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to keep on trying.

I mixed about a nickel sized amount of Sauve conditioner in with the BS and tried that. My hair doesn't look dirty, but it feels as though it's just weighted down with product. Still that chlorine feel, kwim? I think tomorrow I'm just going to try a good scalp massage and acv rinse and see what happens. It is curling like crazy though!

Yeah, we're talking about "no-poo" not "U-No-Poo The constipation sensation that's sweeping the nation."

(10 points if you catch the literary reference!)

This method did not work for my dry hair at all. On the other hand, I've been using DevaCurl's No-Poo shampoo for about 2 years and i LOVE it. Dh and dd use it too. I only use it once a week believe it or not, my hair is quite dry and looks better (not oily or greasy) as the week goes on.

btw-it is about $13 a bottle here and is made w/ natural ingrediants. It lasts us maybe 3 months, but like I said we are not daily washers. Smells yummy and makes your scalp feel tingly and clean due to the peppermint oil!

I had the opposite issue- my hair did not get clean.

I used 1 tbsp BC to 1 c H2O and my hair was quite greasy.

i no-poo about once every 6 weeks, and just water rinse every day or so. i don't feel i need to no-poo more often at all, but i've been doing it for 4 years!
