I like my current shampoo okay (Suave daily clarifying), and I need to use it up anyway, but I'm interested in how to go several days between washings. Can you only do this if you're doing the BS? I'm planning on switching to a more natural shampoo eventually, but can I start the every other day washing now? How?

Absolutely! When I started I was already washing every other day. Then I would just prolong the time between washings by one more day (or half a day if I had to be in public for some reason) each time. Now I wash once a week. Once I ran out of shampoo I went to BS - and just reused the bottle. Depending on your hair type you may experience greasy hair the day before you wash but as your body oils balance out your hair will look nice longer.

The reason that many people use BS rather than shampoo is because there are chemicals in the shampoo which are carcinogenic and can be absorbed through the skin. There are other reasons as well but this is the reason I decided to discontinue using it.

I wasn't able to go longer between washes til I started no-pooing a couple years ago. But during the times I have gone back to shampoo, I still do not need to wash very often. Once my scalp stopped producing so much oil it hasn't reverted back. I think it might if I went back to shampooing daily though.

Specific instructions on no-pooing please?

1. Before showering, combine one tablespoon baking soda with one cup warm or hot water in a plastic bottle. Shake it for a moment and put it aside.
2. Combine one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (ACV) with one cup water in another plastic bottle.
3. Shower. Wet hair and slowly pour the baking soda mix onto your hair. Massage your scalp for a few minutes. You will probably not feel the baking soda, but it's there. Briefly work through the rest of your hair. Rinse.
4. Apply the ACV solution. Massage into scalp, and follow with a cool rinse. The cool water closes the cuticles and cuts down on frizzes.

* This will work best if you wait a few days after your last hair washing. Your hair may also have to go through a "detox" period of greasy hair which can last a week or two. During this time your hair is getting rid of old shampoo build-up. Be patient.
* ACV, of course, smells like vinegar. Don't worry though; once you have rinsed your hair the smell will go away. If it doesn't, you are using too much ACV.
* You don't have to condition your hair every time you wash.
* Don't be afraid to experiment and do what works best for you.
* Baking soda is also known as bicarbonate of soda. It is sold in most supermarkets, health food stores and similar places.
* Your hair may go through a transition period of up to two weeks, but if you can get past that, your hair will look and feel great!

I am using the advise that Spastica gave me. I mix just a little shampoo (Sauve) with baking soda in a cup with water and use that. I'm slowly decreasing the amount of shampoo I use each time. It's helping my hair adjust.

maybe a dumb question...but do you just buy the ACV at the grocery store? any special kind? any good places to buy it cheap in bulk?

Spastica 01-11-2008 04:08 PM

This may help.

I use plain ACV from the grocery store - grocery store brand or Heinz or whatever. The organic ACV is too gloppy for me. I dilute it with water by half and keep it in a spray bottle - I spray the bottom ends of my hair (from ears down) with the ACV spray. During the winter, I add some good conditioner with the ACV for extra moisturization.

If no poo is too much of a hassle, you can do it every once in a while, or switch to an organic SLS free shampoo - but you get better results with no poo usually. I switch things around from time to time (organic shampoo, no poo, etc).
