I have rounded up some friends and family and tomorrow I will be joining all you dready folk!!!

I have a question, too!

I have some Pantene Clarifying Shampoo. Will that be ok to use? It is for removing buildup, and I used it today and my hair felt really clean - not conditioned.
So.. what do you think?

I have a whole bottle of it, I was kinda hoping to just not waste it.

So tomorrow I have my MIL coming to visit and her, DH, and a few friends are going to help back-comb my hair. I am so excited!

I started stalking this tribe almost two years ago! I had my DH comb three dreads, and then I chickened out. I am ready this time.

Wish me luck!
(And that I have dreads half as beautiful as my DDs!)

it took about 2 years for my hair to stop shrinking, and another year or 2 for it to start growing. it didn't really grow much till I'd had my dreads about 6 years. then they started growing so much it was like pouring out of my head.

I have been an on and off lurker to to the dread threads

so if you have heiny length straight as an arrow fine hair and you were to dread it, how much intial shrinkage are we talking? would it end up being shoulder length or mid back length or shorter?

Anyone start out with super long hair? picts to share of what phases your head went through?

Anyone know about the clarifying shampoo? I will not be washing for a few days, but I'd like to know!

Thanks!

My dreads are shrinking again!!!! It will be a year in Dec. and I am hoping they stop shrinking soon because I can't pull the 4 in front back anymore. My hair was half way down my back and some are chin length and some are shoulder length. When did everyone elses stop shrinking? At the beginning of summer I could pull it back in a bun and wrap some around the bun and now I can barely get some pulled back :
i feel your pain mama! Mine are shrink shrinking up too. I have these 2 oogley stubs that pop out of ponytail on the side of me face. Boo for shrinkage.

They look great!

I've tried a different clarifying shampoo (Neutrogena) to get the Dr B's buildup out with no luck. I'm doing baking soda mixed in a small bowl of water now and kicking myself for not doing it sooner! It works great! I would just pass the shampoo on to someone else rather than risk it.

Also, you my want to wait more than a few days. I think I held out for two weeks before I couldn't wait any longer and my dreads held up really well to washing at that point.

Thanks, organicsister!

I have heard a few days to a week, but it shouldn't be a problem to go more than a week for me.

I don't normally wash more than once a week regularly, anyway.

I will try the baking soda. I used to use bs/vinegar to wash with, but I just never got it right and eventually just used my own handmade bar soap. The residue didn't bother me, because I was brushing. I don't want to use it now.

My hair is fluffy and huge. I feel like I have huge 80s hair!

So far, so good.

Nemesis....
Your dreads look great girlie...your pre-dread hair looks alot like mine.I have about 4 now just from neglect, but i am to go this wednesday and have a friend comb/twist the rest of my head.
I'm NO expert, but you might be safe using the clarifying shampoo you have if you really dilute it.Like maybe just a few drops in a 16 oz cup then filled with water...?

Lightheart, here is my progression since Dec. as you can see they have shrunk a LOT (my hair was half way down my back when started), but they also have gotten much fatter too after getting skinny first if that makes sense! And I only have 16 dreads just for reference. But I did notice how much fatter they are now than even back in May, but back in May I could wrap hair around the bun and I can't now.

Nice pics. Mine are just now starting to shrink which I guess is a good thing because they will get fatter.

I broke my first hair tie yesterday : I must invest in the heavy duty hair ties now.

This week I am dying some dark red and some a bright red. I hope I don't mess it up.

Also mine are pooping little balls of shed hair out the ends. It's really annoying/looks horrible. I have been cutting them off but I suppose I should be crocheting them back in.

Today is Day 4! I think they are looking great in the back, the front is a whole other story!

I am considering brushing out my bangs in the front to help me make it through! Does anybody have any advice about this, any pros/cons?
Some of them seem too big, also. Like the sections are bigger than I thought they were. Would it be futile to try and separate some of them now? Or should I just try and roll with it and see how they turn out?
When I look at the back, I think they look good.. but they just feel too big.

Ok. Advice is sooo welcome!

Overall, I really like them. I'd like the front to be less helmet-y, though. I'll see if I can upload a pic!

Let me resize that.

The back I think is coming along nicely, I see a big improvement in the past four days.

But the front is so fluffly, even when tied down!

Ha! I am having the opposite problem. The front looks great but I have some really stubborn long hair at the base of my skull that is refusing to dread...sigh...takes time takes time. All the pictures are awesome!!!

Turnipmama, I have a bunch at the base of my head that won't dread, also. I think because we started at the front, everybody's arms were tired by the time we got to the back. I am thinking of asking DH to backcomb them again, they are just loose.

I fiddled with the front hair a bit yesterday... I don't have "bangs" really, but I loosened up some more hair so don't look so... pulled back, I guess. I am much more pleased with it now, even though it was a small change.

Still no washing, but man! My head is getting itchy!

Nemesis: looking great! My bangs wouldn't stay in their dreads. They fell out and now are growing long enough to put behind my ears. I'm trying to keep them pushed back on my head though so they will hopefully find their way back in. No pros or cons really.

The best thing I did for my itchies was a bit of water, a bit of apple cider vinegar and some rosemary essential oil. REALLY helped!

majikfaerie, your hair looks so beautiful!

I think I am going to try that vinegar spray today, OrganicSister! My head is pretty itchy off and on. Not so bad when I am really busy, though.

Today my hair is wacky and fluffy. Yesterday it looked like it was calming down a bit, but I was tricked!
Today I am making up for my lack of nice looking hair by wearing glittery stripey tights.

My DD is really loving my dreads so far. She is so proud of me! lol She's even offered to help me separate them, although I'm sure that's more for revenge than assistance!

Lovely pics, ladies.
I thought I'd come on here & post when I WASN'T feeling frustrated and hopeless about my hair, haha. The good news is, it seems my hair is ripe for dreading & very eager to help dread itself. The bad news is since DH last had a block of time to help separate at the top/front of my head, all the unseparated hair had clumped into three huge dreads. So we are working on ripping it apart into something more flattering. I guess I should be thankful that my hair is so smart it knows exactly what to do! LOL. Working on tidying up the existig ones in the back this afternoon while I wait for DH to get home & work on the top...

Today is my 1 week dreadaversary! My hair is fuzzy, frizzy, and only marginally dreaded. I feel okay about it, though.
