Heya! Lovin the new place!:

WonderMa 03-23-2008 11:47 AM

Today we are taking out the rest of the braids and doing a little separating and backcombing for DD. She is anxious to have all her hair "the same", since we have let the back dread up, but kept the rest in braids. It's so hard to keep it separated, though.

Majik, did you mention wrapping the sections in string? I was wondering if you mean at the root to keep them separate?
I think we will try that. I have a lot of cotton string here, in many colors!

DD is excited. I will post pics when it is all done.

Ahava 03-23-2008 06:27 PM

Hi all,
joining this tribe and subbing as well. I've been following this tribe for a loooooong time now, and last night got an itch i my pants and had DP put in one dread. so, I only have one, thin little dready amongst my mess of curls, but I'm sure some more will make their way onto my head as well. He just backcombed and palm rolled...it's super cute and pretty thin.

majikfaerie 03-23-2008 08:55 PM

I did mention wrapping the roots with string. as a prettier alternative to the rubber bands. the string will keep them separate pretty well too.
I have lots of colourful wraps in my dreds, I love them.

Hi Ahava (love your username ) welcome

WonderMa 03-23-2008 09:34 PM

Well, we did all of DD's hair and it looks better than I could even guess it would!

She is having a lot of fun pretending they are tentacles, antennae, etc...

The finished product!

Sorry the last one is so blurry, I had to have the flash off.

Thanks for your help!

majikfaerie 03-23-2008 09:44 PM

wow! wonderma! that looks awesome
you'll probably have to keep rubbing and separating them for a while, but judging by her hair, they'll probably settle in nicely.

MamabearTo4 03-24-2008 09:12 AM

OMGosh! They look so good!!!!! She looks proud of them, too!

mountainmidwife 03-24-2008 10:10 AM

Cute! Can't wait to see them when they settle in

RaRa7 03-24-2008 01:35 PM

wowee wow-they look awesome!! I wish mine looked like that...........

I enjoyed reading and looking at the pics-thanks for sharing

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

My DD is really loving her locks.

What should I be doing now? I tried to make sure they got dry after her swim lessons yesterday. I kinda roll and separate them every day, so it doesn't hurt to rip them apart if they get too knotted together. Is that right?

How long should I leave the string in? Any help would be appreciated!

majikfaerie 03-25-2008 07:24 PM

sounds like you're doing the right thing.
me, I'd leave the string in. I still have random bits of string in my hair that's from years ago. the dread kinda absorbs the string. its nice to see how much the dreds grow above the string
but if you want to take them out, you can do it when it seems like they've settled in

I want a string now!!!

Hi. I've been thinking about dreads for awhile. Maybe mine when it gets a little longer, maybe doing my ds's as well. I just thought I'd sub here and hang out for awhile.

Apmommato3 03-29-2008 11:23 PM

Wonderma! Her hair looks amazing...Mine is like nine months old now and doesn't look nearly as good! She's so cute, too. I'll bet she will enjoy the low-maintenance aspect of locks. I know my dd (who is 9) would love it, but she's old enough to care what people think..and she always points out that people are staring at me She has the same fine, thick, tangly hair as me though, so I think it would really cut down on the tears at comb out time....we'll see. Thanks for sharing your daughter's process with us! Absolutely beautiful...

WonderMa 03-29-2008 11:42 PM

My DD is very much loving the new do!

She doesn't really mind the palmrolling and separating, the strings really help a lot. She is very very proud of her locks, and helps me roll the ones she can see in front.

Here is her one week progress:

Yes! DD2 has 2 or 3 in the back that I just can't bear to comb out! Her dad is all for leaving them, so we probably will.

majikfaerie 03-31-2008 04:35 AM

lookin great, wonderma jr!!!

Persephone 03-31-2008 03:30 PM

Hi all! I'm subbing to this thread- maybe it's spring fever or something more, but I'm thinking about dreads seriously. I have tailbone length hair, and it's been the same straight all my life. I can't bear to cut it short, but I think I might be able to bear dreads- my only fear is that if I change my mind, I WILL have to cut it short.

sunmamma 04-01-2008 04:28 PM

lookin good, wonderma...I'll have to snap a shot of my little guy. We've never brished his hair and its all locked up in the back but not the front. He wanted them, and says he will let his locks grow to the ground! They are just naturally formed, and I have never had to even separate them. They are slowly creeping towards the front of his hair. I guess one day the whole head will catch on!

So, how do the grandparents feel about it?? My side of the family gives us much grief....so annoying!!! My dp's side respects his personal choices, thankfully!

majikfaerie 04-02-2008 03:42 AM

I love that there's a bunch of dreddy kids on mdc
