I wouldn't be pleased with my MIL taking my photos, but I wouldn't cause a family feud over it either.  You have an easy way to stop this from happening again and that is to block her from your FB pictures.  I'd keep the peace in the family and let it slide.  If she asks you why she's blocked, tell her you don't feel comfortable with her re-posting your photos.  She asks why not...you say "pass the bean dip."

This isn't true. You don't have to register a copyright to own it. You have to register a copyright in order to be able to obtain attorneys' fees if someone violates the copyright. It adds an extra measure of damages.
