I dont know if this is the right thread archive to post this in, but I'm up in arms. I've never been in a situation that I've felt so compelled to straighten this mess out, and now feel I have to go to the local newspaper (which I have never done), since Walden Books emailed me back 17 DAYS later with a bunch of hog wash.
Anyway, to try to sum the situation up..... I'm a SpEd teacher aid, and was in the mall with some of my students along with some other aids. The kids were high school age, but all were enjoying it a lot in there. Then we go to the checkout, and right in front of us, on it's own magazine display was the new edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
Normally this wouldnt seem as an issue, but at first glance I thought it was a Penthouse or Playboy sitting there for my students to gawk at (which a couple of them were looking and giggling at it). I spoke to the cashier about it, and explained that maybe it could at least be placed differently so it wasnt sticking out like a soar thumb, and that I had planned on bringing in my 9yr old son later to shop there (since it's basically our only book store), but didnt feel he needed to gawk at it either and feel that this is an ok image to look at woman (in a family book store at that, too). She basically brushed it off that they get told what to do and have no say as to how they place things....
Well.... that's basically what I got from the Walden Book headquarters after I emailed them the next day(wanted to sleep on it) with a fairly long, but to the point email. I mentioned that this really bothered me, that I couldnt bring my son in there until it was placed less obvious, that I grew up in that store and couldnt believe where their morals went, and ultimately mentioned going to the newspaper about it.
They sent me that response 17 days later and although it was 5 short paragraphs long, it looked as though it was computer generated for a general problem like mine. All they said to be considerate was, "Thank you very much for your expression of concern over materials carried by Waldenbooks..." Then it went on to say that they werent gonna move it, and that they thought I wanted them to remove it completely. They mentioned that they "comply with local laws and ordinances in the display and sale of adult titles", I never said that WAS a adult magazine.
They just didnt seem to get it, that it was the cover of that certain issue, and where it was placed for all to see in a mostly family book store.
Well, if any of you made it this far, I thank you so very much for taking the time in your busy day. I had to vent and try to get some input before I take the next step (whatever that may be). As soon as I get a chance I'm gonna try to stop by there when I dont have my son with me (which is hard when being a single parent) and find out if they still have it there in the same spot by the only register in the store.
