CHICAGO (AP) - ...Illinois education officials failed to notify schools that some food shipped to them had been contaminated with ammonia, even though some cafeteria managers had complained for a year, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Dozens of children were sickened.

...documents showed the state Board of Education knew in early 2002 that ammonia-laden food was still showing up in schools,...

...U.S. Department of Agriculture... did not notify schools or other agencies, and the department later allowed food to be shipped ...despite a quarantine, the newspaper said.

Nearly a year after the leak, 42 children at Laraway Elementary School in Joliet were rushed to a hospital after eating chicken tenders from the warehouse that state health officials said contained up to 133 times the accepted level of ammonia.

I remember when ketchup was declared a vegetable, so why would it shock me that ammonia is now a condiment?

When I went to a Chicago public school in the mid '80's, they used to 'recycle' food. And not in a good way, either. If someone dumped an uneaten portion of food in the garbage can, there was a lady there that scooped it out and put it in a plastic bag.

She told anyone who asked that she was taking the food home for her dog. But interestingly enough, the same entree would be served as a side dish the next day.

:Puke

Ammonia is probably one of the 'good' things they let slip through. Ugh, I'm getting the shivers just thinking about this.
